2010 Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset

What's wrong with being an elitist? If it means riding Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels, all of us would be happy with the sobriquet. It is simple; the wheel has gotten a thorough makeover boasting serious weight reduction (135g in total), and is still selling at a super price.

We're certainly happy any time a wheel gets lighter, and happier still, when the weight saved is at the rim. This new Elite uses aggressive Inter Spoke Milling (ISM) to take away all the excess aluminum between the spoke threads and sidewalls. So the rims are now 80g lighter in total, and they still have Mavic's FORE drilling, so you don't need a rim strip. The rear rim also helps build a stronger wheel; the rim is asymmetric, allowing for higher spoke tension and better triangulation of spokes between flanges.

The other component of the weight-saving equation are the new-design front hub, paired with an improvement on the rear hub they put in use last year. The result is 50g in weight savings. Tying the hubs to the rims are bladed stainless steel straight-pull spokes. We like steel spokes. Strong, durable, present very little surface area to the wind.

The Ksyrium Elite has 18 front spokes and 20 rear. The rims are made of Maxtal aluminum alloy. The front rim is 22mm tall, the rear 25mm, and asymmetric. The braking surfaces have UB Control machining. The front wheel has a radial lacing pattern, and the rear has Mavic's Isopulse; radial on the drive side and two-cross on the non-drive. The front and rear hubs are each made from one piece of aluminum alloy. They run on Mavic's QRM+ high-end bearings. The axles are aluminum. The rear wheel has Mavic's FTS-L freewheel mechanism and an aluminum cassette body.

This wheelset is part of Mavic's MP3 extended warranty program. The acronym stands for Mavic Product Protection Plan, and it provides you with two years of almost unlimited no-fault protection from Mavic. More details can be found on the MP3 website. Please note that MP3 coverage must be purchased within 7 days of when you buy your wheels. And we can do all the registration paperwork on your behalf. Just call or email us and we'll take care of it.

The wheels come with a spoke wrench, bearing adjustment tool, BR301 quick release skewers, user guide and warranty card. The ETRTO size is 622x15c. Recommended tire sizes are 700x19-28c or 650x19-28c. Choose between a Campagnolo-compatible cassette body (ED10) or Shimano/SRAM compatible (M10). The wheels weigh 675g front, 875g rear for a Wheelset weight of 1550g (700c, excluding skewers).
