When Shimano first introduced their Dura Ace 10-Speed ST-7801 STI Levers, the most notable change in comparison to Dura-Ace 9-Speed STI was the cross-section across the lever hoods. 10-Speed are shorter in height and narrower in width throughout the hoods. The angle between the hood and the handlebar was also reduced to improve hand comfort by reducing stress points between the hand and the lever. Furthermore, the hood was reduced 5mm in circumference, making the levers more amenable to different hand sizes. The difference in hand comfort with 10-Speed is unmistakable.

The shifting mechanism is more ergonomic than ever before. Unlike the 9-speed levers which moved strictly from side-to-side, 10-speed levers move slightly inward as you shift, allowing you to maintain the natural curvature of your hand as you shift. Also, the overall lever throw has been reduced by 10mm to require less input effort. One other big improvement was the reduction of the shift effort required for upshifts (into smaller cogs). The shifting fluidity of the levers is a dramatic improvement you'll notice the instant you begin riding.
