The bike industry is a wee bit lacking in standards. Be it seatpost size, front derailleur clamp size, headset size, or any of a dozen other details that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, you can't predict what you're about to run into 'til you get there. One of the most vexing instances of this is the lack of consistency in the inner diameter of the carbon steerer tube of carbon fiber forks. As you know, you don't pound a star nut into a carbon steerer, rather you use what's known as a compression plug to hold the fork in the frame. What you can't necessarily do, though, is use one manufacturer's compression plug on another manufacturer's fork because more often than not plug A in your hand doesn't have enough latitude in size to fit in fork B in your other hand.

Thankfully the small parts mavens at Problem Solvers have made a compression plug with a size range unlike any other plug we've ever seen. We haven't run into a fork yet that it wouldn't work in, and it's saved us (and our customers) from serious frustration on many occasions. Available in 1-1/8" only. And to reiterate -- you only use these compression plugs on fork with carbon steerers, not on forks with steel or aluminum steerers!
