Mavic uses a plasma beam torch to spread titanium and aluminum oxides on the rim, creating thermal insulation and giving the sidewall 30 times the hardness of a conventional aluminum rim. Braking distances are reduced by 20% in dry conditions and 50% in rainy conditions. You get vastly increased durability as well.
