Training with power isn't good enough: If you train with power, you probably want to race with power too. And if there's one truth about race wheels, it's that no detail is worth overlooking. Up 'til recently the twin obsessions were lightness and aerodynamics. But now we have a third consideration: Mechanical resistance, primarily in the form of bearing drag. By reducing this drag, less of your power is wasted, translating into added speed. And it's for this reason you see the ProTour-wide embrace of ceramic bearings. Ceramic bearings are harder and rounder -- thereby making them measurably faster -- than stainless steel bearings.
In the 2006 Tour de France, Team Phonak raced every stage with Power Tap-equipped rear wheels. And Cycleops hopped them up by replacing their 4 stock stainless bearings with ceramic bearings. Now you can get the same upgrade to your existing Power Tap: You can send us your wheel and we'll extract the stock bearings and retrofit your hub with Grade 5 ceramic bearings. Grade 5 bearings are the finest available in the marketplace, round to a tolerance of 1 5-millionth of an inch. It doesn't matter which model you ride: Standard, Pro, SL, or 2.4. All of these hubs can benefit from the upgrade, and you'll be riding with the best of all worlds: Supremely accurate power data, plus supremely precise bearings for minimal mechanical drag.
Our goal is to make the logistics of upgrading your wheel to ceramic bearings as quick and simple as possible for you. In order to initiate the process, please proceed by adding a retrofit to your cart here. At the end of the purchase process, you will be given an order number.
