Campagnolo abandoned high-end triple drivetrains because a judicious use of a compact crankset and an appropriate cassette can comfortably get you up any climb worth riding (not walking) over -- Alps, Pyrenees, Rockies -- you name it. In this compact version of the new Record Ultra Torque crankset you get a chainring configuration of 50/34 and still benefit from all of the technical and performance advantages of the standard Record Ultra Torque crankset. In every detail it's identical -- the brilliant construction and flex-resistance of the massive semi axle BB spindle; the same Q-Factor and weight advantages; the same amazing hollow arms and spider. The only difference is that you get a 50/34 chainring ratio instead of the traditional 53/39.
We love compact cranksets for serious climbing. Why? For many riders a traditional 53/39 crankset doesn't provide adequately low gearing for monster climbs unless you choose a wide-spread cassette such as a 13-26 or a 13-29. The problem there, though, is that the jumps between gears are huge. More often than not, you're stuck in between gears -- one feels a bit too big, the next one down is just a bit too small. With the use of smaller chainrings (e.g. a 50/34 instead of a 53/39), you can make use of a tight cassette cluster such as an 11-23 without losing any of your low end. In our minds, 50x34 is an absolutely race-worthy combo, as a 50x11 is a bigger gear than a 53x12, and a 34x23 is smaller than a 39x25. And unlike a triple, you end up with virtually no redundant gearing -- virtually all 20 gears at your fingertips will be a unique gearing.
Like the standard version, the compact Record Ultra Torque crankset is equipped with anti-friction treated Ultra-Drive EPS chainrings and featherlight alloy chainring bolts. It is available in 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm lengths. The bolt pattern of the Campy CT crankset won't be exactly 110mm BCD, and as such you'll be limited to the use of Campy chainrings only. FSA or other aftermarket cranks are not compatible with Campy spacing. Also, you'll need to purchase a Record Ultra Torque bottom bracket along when you buy this crankset.
