Why do Campagnolo Ergo Levers shift and brake so smoothly? No small credit is due to the Record cables and housing. Record cables are stainless-steel without any sort of surface treatment and the housing is lubricated with special grease. Campagnolo tested Teflon, but found that it had suspect durability. In recent years Campagnolo has improved their raw materials and their housing lubrication to make the cable run 50% more smoothly. It's advisable to use Campy cables and housing together as a unit (i.e. don't use aftermarket housing), or else you risk a significant decrease in performance. Also, please note that Campy derailleur cables are compatible with Ergopower levers only, and will not function with Shimano STI thanks to the shape of the cable head.
