When Pinarello first introduced the F4:13 carbon frameset, they threw down a gauntlet never before seen from the top echelon of Italian frame manufacturers. Pinarello surveyed the marketplace and recognized the insatiable demand for sub-$3000 carbon fiber framesets. Up to that point, Italian carbon fiber was amazing stuff -- bikes like the Colnago C50 and the DeRosa King gave us goose bumps thanks to their fusion of high Italian style and F1-caliber technology. The downside, of course, was that along with goose bumps many folks got the shakes after glancing at the price tag. You get what you pay for. We couldn't agree more. But with the F4:13, Pinarello did a perfect tightrope walk to give us pro-quality aesthetics, unerring performance, and value unlike anything we'd ever before seen from Italy. It was (and continues to be) more than just one of our best-selling bikes -- it's on the short list of our best-loved bikes. Few models evoke the short term and long term pleasure of race bike ownership like an F4:13.
Given the worldwide success of the F4:13, it makes great sense that Pinarello chose to employ trickle-down technology to provide value-minded cyclists with the delight of the F4:13, but at a new level of cost savings. The Pinarello FP5 is the twin of the F4:13. The FP5 is literally made in the very same monocoque molds as the F4:13, but with a different top layer of carbon fiber. The F4:13 is made from what's technically known as 30HM3K carbon fiber -- a high-modulus carbon that has a tensile strength of 30 tons per square cm (30HM), and an exterior weave of 3000 waves per crossing (3K). Like the F4:13, it has a tensile strength of 30 tons per square cm, but the exterior weave is 12K carbon. The 12,000 waves per crossing (12K) give the carbon latticework squares a pronounced diamond-like largeness, far bolder than what you see in the tight weave of 3K or 1K. The ride quality, the handling, and the style are no less formidable than the F4:13, but it comes with a substantial cost savings.
The FP5 comes as a complete bike with a top notch Dura-Ace 10 speed build kit. When you combine the quality of the frameset with the quality of the kit, it's an astounding value for a race-ready bike. You get Shimano Dura-Ace 10spd STI levers, derailleurs, and Shimano Ultegra SL brake calipers. The crankset is a Pinarello MOst carbon compact crankset with an external bottom bracket. It also comes with a Pinarello MOst carbon seatpost, carbon stem, and alloy handlebar. The Shimano WH-RS10 pre-built wheels and Continental Ultra Sport tires round things out. The FP5 is the rare instance of a pre-configured bike that needs no upgrading -- it's a purebred race machine out of the box. It's available in numerous color options, in 8 sizes.
