Multitalented.

As much as we want to categorize the 2016 Ridley X-Trail Ultegra Complete Bike into one of the traditionally tidy cycling disciplines, it just isn't possible. It sits in what Ridley has dubbed the All Road category, meaning it's just as happy rolling over smooth, freshly laid pavement by the coast as it is ripping down a gravel-strewn, rutted out dirt B-road on the lesser traveled side of a mountain. The geometry and spec sheet are so versatile that not even mucky sand pits and grassy corners in your local cyclocross series are out of reach. That's because Ridley kitted out the all-comers frameset with Shimano's just-below-pro Ultegra drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes, so it's ready to turn off the beaten path and explore new terrain.

With racing in mind, Ridley shapes the X-Trail's frame using lightweight, unidirectional carbon, equipping the frame to offer quick accelerations and a stiff, responsive ride. The subtly assymetric Oryx Disc fork is reinforced on the left leg to allow it to more efficiently bear twisting forces applied by disc brakes, and the 15 x 100 and 12 x 142mm thru-axles give the frame confidence-inspiring stiffness throughout.

Ridley uses the X-Trail as a melting pot to mix the geometries of its road racing and traditional, Euro 'cross frames. The end result resembles a road bike more than a classic cyclocross bike like the X-Night, with a lower bottom bracket, shorter chainstays, and a stack/reach combination that leaves riders in less of a shoulder-intensive, slammed racing position. In contrast to its road racing frames, Ridley extends the X-Trail's head tube by 10mm, bringing riders into a more upright position to accommodate longer training rides rather than racing exclusively. It's only slightly more aggressive than the Fenix, in fact, but unlike its endurance road cousin, the X-Trail is designed to be run with tires up to 40mm wide to handle more rugged terrain.
