It only gets better

Although Ridley was gunning for an eighth World Championship victory earlier this year, the race was lost to another multi-time World Champion. But, one race doesn't dictate success, and the redesigned X-Night from last season showed such promise, that Ridley Bicycles of Belgium chose to continue along that path of development to make the X-Night 30 Disc Complete Cyclocross Bike, the best 'cross bike yet. Gone are the over-sized tubes, and euro-height bottom bracket of a few years ago. Instead the focus is on stiffness and maneuverability.

Ridley wanted its X-Night frame to be its lightest yet. To that end, they used 30 and 24-ton high modulus carbon fiber for the frame layup. The 24-ton designates that the carbon is able to withstand 24 tons of pressure per square inch. And while a 24-ton rating may seem a bit much for a bicycle frame, using such a strong weave allowed Ridley to engineer a frame that draws upon inspiration from the Helium SL Road Frame. Using a 24-ton weave allows engineers to design tubing that is stronger and yet lighter —the stronger the material, the less is needed. So, in this case, less really is 'more.' Additionally, Ridley removed the integrated seatmast —a welcome change to taller riders who pack their bikes often—and replaced it with a removable 27.2mm seatpost. This seemingly simple design change then translates into slimmer seat stays and tubing. Thinner seat stays result in vertical compliance which makes the frame more comfortable to ride on a rutted cyclocross course. The junctions have been further trimmer down and all of these design changes have led to a frame that is under 1kg. That means Ridley shaved over 350grams off of the frame. The geometry changes made last season, namely a lowered bottom bracket (3mm) and shorter wheelbase (9mm) have remained. The latter provides faster handling while the former gives smaller riders more top tube clearance. The lowered head tube means that riders who prefer a more aggressive cockpit position have the flexibility to lower their handlebars accordingly.

While the X-Night 10 features traditional cantilever brakes, a nod to the continuing preference of its pro riders, the X-Night 30 is equipped with full Avid BB-7 disc stoppers. It is perfectly suited for the consummate racer who puts their bike through its paces. To that end, Ridley used its beefier 4ZA Onyx fork which helps to counteract braking forces keeping the front end handling smoothly.

The X-Night is kitted out in the newest Ultegra 11-Speed drivetrain. With a 36/46 tooth front chain ring set up and a rear 11-28 tooth cassette, there are plenty of gears to get you up and over any tabletop the course may offer. And it's ideal for those seemingly endless uphills on gravel road race courses. The crankset is an FSA Carbon crank. The X-Night rolls on a set of 4ZA Cirrus Disc wheels and Kenda Clement tires, while the cockpit is a full regiment of Ridley's 4ZA components including a world champion branded 4ZA Cirrus Pro saddle.

The Ridley X-Night 30 Disc Complete Cyclocross Bike is available in sizes 50 to 58cm and in the color Carbon/red/white. Ridleys tend to run slightly large so please use the size chart and top-tube measurement to find your appropriate size.
