'Cross bikes historically have been about as advanced as stone hammers, and we have to admit, we like it that way. Don't get us wrong, the carbon fiber machines being piloted by factory teams get our hearts racing, but there's something beautifully uncomplicated about even the most sophisticated cyclocross bike. Thankfully, Ridley has kept simplicity at the forefront with the X-Bow/Shimano 105 - Tiagra Disc Complete Bike, but the Belgian 'cross gurus added disc brakes to the formula for consistent braking when you're tearing up the grass circuit. With proven geometry and a race-ready spec, it gives you everything you need to mix it up at your local series, and adds a few nice touches that give it added versatility for those times when you want to hit some single track, tarmac, or anything else that strikes your fancy.

The X-Bow's 7005 aluminum frame forgoes the aggressively butted tubing and tapered head tube of the X-Ride, but borrows heavily from the geometry. It maintains the relaxed head angle and higher bottom bracket of classic 'cross race bikes, for aggressive cornering in the dirt. The handling is the most relaxed out of Ridley's lineup, owed mostly to mellowing steering geometry. But don't think for a second that it won't dice up turns with the best of 'em. A short wheelbase keeps the handling lively, and it means that you won't have any issues throwing it into turns at full speed.

While the straight gauge tube set won't win any awards for revolutionary design, it does get external tube forming that helps it cope with the stresses of cyclocross. Specifically, the down tube is heavily formed, with a horizontal squash giving it greater weld surface at the head tube, and manipulation on the vertical plane to provide maximum weld surface at the bottom bracket shell. When you factor in the slightly flattened portion at the bottom of the top tube, which enhances carrying comfort, it becomes clear that the X-Bow has racing written all over it. But since it will likely do double-duty for commuting, training, and just generally messing around, it gets dual water bottle mounts to enhance the versatility.

Ridley outfitted the X-Bow with a blend of components that are perfect for cutting your teeth at your local race series. The 4ZA Zornyc fork mates vibration damping carbon fiber legs to a durable aluminum steerer tube. The build kit consists of Shimano's Tiagra group for the shifters, 12-28t cassette, and front derailleur, with a 105 rear derailleur to round out the drivetrain. The 105 - Tiagra blend is a proven, reliable performer, without a painful price tag when a season's worth of mud-paste finally takes its toll on moving parts. The crankset is a cross-optimized 48/34t FSA Omega, while braking is handled by Avid BB5 mechanical disc brakes. The cockpit consists of 4ZA items. It's not super flashy, but it's nothing if not ruthlessly effective.

I am 5 feet 8 inches in height and have a 30 inseam. I ride a 52cm Kestrel Talon as my road bike. Is the small the right size for me?

The geo on a TT bike like the Talon is not going to transfer the the CX geo of the X- Bow. At 5'8", either bike would fit, it just comes down to the riding position you're looking for. The XS will have a smaller stack height, allow a more aggressive/race position with more saddle to bar drop. The small will have a taller stack height by 1.5 cm, allowing a more neutral saddle to bar measure. The small will have a high standover compared to the XS. For what it's worth since the bike is no longer in stock, I'm a 30 inseam at 5' 7" tall. The XS was nearly a perfect fit. The only change I made was to add a longer stem to accommodate my longer torso/reach (a 120mm btw). I am in agreeance with what Jon J. says based on your body profile though. Keep in mind the XS has a longer reach over the S based on the geometry table. Anyway, if you're still looking at this model elsewhere, or the frame which is available here as of 4/7/14, I hope this helps.

Ridley doesn't list the standover for the X-Bow. The XS frame does feature a sloping top tube. When sizing I would use the stack and reach measures to determine proper fit. I personally pace more emphasis on rider position when on the bike pedaling rather than straddling it with both feet on the ground. Based on the reach measures, the Small has a short reach of 373mm compared to 378 on the XS, but the stack height is lower on the XS at 527. Both would be on the big size for a 5'2" rider, but the XS would have the lower standover.

Don't forget you usually want to size down in a cross bike...

Also important: manufacturers often pick their own measurement standards when reporting geometry. My 54 Cannondale measures as a 55 in Felt's book...

Just a heads up - comes with black fork

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've only ridden the bike once so can't leave an actually give a review worth anything but am just letting folks know that the X-bow comes with a black fork like shown on Ridley's site and not a white one as shown here. Makes no difference to me but given all the matchy matchy I see around town it'll probably matter to someone.

Great Value

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have never owned a CX bike before, so this is my first foray (I race Road/BH G6 SRAM RED). But so far, I love this thing. Great value for the money. I took it on a couple of rides on the dirt near a local lake, and I had a blast. Most of my other bikes are Ultegra and up- but I gotta say, after using it, there ain't nothin' wrong with Tiagra for this purpose. The reason I bought this bike is to use for a few CX sessions, but mainly as a versatile commuter. I would have to say, for the price I paid, I am very happy with it and it's perfect for the job I need it to do as a "do anything thrash bike". Only thing: Disc brakes don't seem to have a lot of stopping power (Avid), and are a bit loud on the dirt (a humming noise, I never owned Disc brakes before so I'm assuming I need to tune/break-in?). Surprisingly, I thought the bike would feel* heavier, but weight feels just fine so far. There is positive compliance in the rear triangle which I appreciate on the hard stuff.

The humming is probably just your pad rubbing on the rotor. This is the way I was shown to adjust BB5s, you may be able to remove that hum and still get the stopping power (or lack thereof...) they can provide

Now that I have "broken in" the brakes, the discs stop the bike 10x better than when I first rode it. (Duh) And, as far as adjustment- I'll try that.

Much like the disc brakes on a mountain bike, there is actually a process for burning-in new brake pads. Basically, you start off rolling slowly, and apply slight pressure to the brakes. Over several repeats, you increase the speed and braking force to brake in the pads. This often alleviates the squeaking and lack of braking power that comes with new brake pads.
