It's no secret that 27.5-inch wheels are all about finding the sweet spot, which makes them an ideal choice for today's more capable trail bikes. Reynolds knows this better than most, and it developed the R27.5 AM Wheelset to provide a supreme balance of lightweight and unbelievable strength. With an all new rim profile and an ample 23mm internal width that easily supports 2.5-inch tires, this wheelset is aimed squarely at taking apart the roughest, rockiest trails around. However, the sub 1700g weight means that the climb back up won't be so bad.

The news with the R27.5 AM wheelset is a brand new rim. They're 28.5mm wide at the outside, and they feature a generous 23mm internal width as well. Essentially, this means that they'll provide a stable platform for tires up to 2.5-inches in width. Tubeless compatibility has also been refined, with an enhanced bead hook and a deeper middle section that makes tire swaps a bit easier. Furthermore, the extensive aerodynamic experience from Reynolds' composite wheels program makes its way into the R series alloy rims, which means that these hoops cut through the air with a bare minimum of drag.

They're laced to all new Reynolds straight-pull disc hubs that utilize replaceable end caps, making them compatible with most modern axle standards. The rear hub employs a redesigned alloy freehub, which places the pawls in the hub shell, and by doing so, Reynolds has increased the size of the ratchet mechanism for enhanced durability. The hub shell is a straight-pull affair, which improves stiffness and makes replacing broken spokes a snap when the time comes. Meanwhile, weighing in around 1685 grams means that this wheelset is light enough for grueling climbs, but the ample width and incredible strength makes it an ideal choice for enduro racing.

Another nice feature of Reynolds wheels is that they use a durable 28 hole, three-cross lacing pattern, while a traditional spoke and nipple design makes for easy trail service and at-home maintenance. The nipples are alloy for reduced rotational weight, and both front and rear spokes are straight pull DT Swiss that provide a high tension and increased strength.

And while the wheels are plenty tough, all Reynolds wheel owners are able to buy themselves some extra peace of mind by purchasing Reynolds' two-year damage protection plan. It's called RAP, which is short for Reynolds Assurance Plan. The insurance means that you'll have little fear that a crash will ruin your wheel investment.

The Reynolds R27.5 AM wheelset comes with a set of tubeless-ready valves for tubeless tires. Also, the wheels are for disc brakes only, and they come with mounts for six-bolt rotors. Lastly, Reynolds has included end cap spacers for 10x135 and 12x14mm rear axles, and 9, 15, and 20mm front axles.

  • Capitalizes on 27.5in wheels for a true all-mountain platform
  • Wide rim boosts strength while maintaining a climb-friendly weight
  • Redesigned Reynolds RC Red hubs for improved durability
  • Tubeless ready for a plush ride with fewer flats

Game Changer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I put these on my Diamondback Mission 27.5 1.0. I could not believe how much they changed my bike. It rides totally differently , saving 1lb per wheel. Tubeless has been fantastic with no burps running both Maxxis and WTB tires. The bike accelerates, turns, and stops SO much quicker. They look great, and are a better value than just about anything in this price range. They have held true for months now, even riding these in an enduro setting and casing some pretty big hits. Thanks Renyolds and keep up the good work.

Stiff, Smooth, and Stylish

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

So, I picked up these wheels when the rear hub on my stock wheelset started making some unpleasant noises. Now I am glad my stock wheels started having issues.

These wheels roll so much better than the stock wheels that came on my bike. The hubs roll smoothly, especially for a budget hub. Being 28 spokes I was worried these wheels may not hold up to my style or riding. After casing a few jumps and hammering these through a few different rock gardens I am convinced they are strong and stiff. The wheels track well through rocks, and even after a few hard cases they are still as true as they were right out of the box.

Another added bonus is these wheels weighed 1.5 lbs less than the stock wheelset they replaced. Saving weight where it matters most really improves the performance of your bike. These wheels have made a huge difference when accelerating, climbing steep or technical sections of trail, and they corner much better than my stock hoops. For the price I think these wheels are hard to beat.

These wheels were also very easy to install, and they come with two QR 9mm skewers, and end caps so you can use these wheels with a 15mm, 20mm, and 12mm axle set up. They also sealed up easily using only a floor pump.
