Top-shelf.

Chances are that regardless of what industry the term "black label" is used in, the corresponding product is going to be nestled in that exclusive, top-shelf category. Such is the case with Reynolds' new MTN 29er Trail - Black Label wheels, which use the manufacturer's proven carbon MTN hoops as a starting platform, but add in custom DT Swiss hubs and spokes to complete this exclusive 29er package.

At the heart of Reynolds' new Black Label wheel lineup is the high modulus carbon XC rim used in its current MTN collection. The Trail edition is 29mm wide at the outside, and 21mm wide internally, and that generous width increases the volume of your tires, which enables lower pressures while also enabling a more stable platform for cornering. Tubeless compatibility has been continually refined, with an enhanced bead hook and a deeper middle section that makes tire swaps a bit easier. Naturally, they provide the characteristically damp ride that you'd expect from a durable set of carbon rims, meaning that the benefits extend far beyond weight and stiffness. The extensive aerodynamic expertise of the team at Reynolds is also on full display, meaning that these carbon hoops cut through the air with a bare minimum of drag.

The Black Label name is derived from Reynolds' new graphics technology, which relies on heat sublimation. This extensive process results in the clean and durable, blacked-out appearance on the rims that, in addition to giving off a stealthy look, shaves roughly 10-15 grams per wheel compared to standard decal application.

The rims are laced to DT Swiss 240 Centerlock hubs that utilize replaceable end caps, which make them compatible with most modern axle standards. The hubs have also been given a custom Black Label graphic treatment to match the rims, completing the all-black aesthetic. The rear hub employs DT's proven alloy freehub, meaning that durability and serviceability is ensured. The hub shell is a straight-pull affair, which improves stiffness and makes replacing broken spokes a snap when the time comes. And while this wheelset is aimed squarely at the highest levels of cross country racing and trail riding, the svelte 1500g weight for a set makes them an excellent option for the emerging genre of disc brake, mixed-conditions road bikes and cyclocross racing.

A nice feature of Reynolds' wheels is that they use a durable 28 hole, three-cross lacing pattern with a traditional spoke and nipple design for field service and easy truing and maintenance. The nipples are alloy for reduced rotational weight, and both front and rear spokes are straight-pull DT Swiss Aerolight for high tension and total wheel strength.

The Reynolds MTN 29er Trail - Black Label wheelset comes with a set of tubeless-ready valves for tubeless tires. Only use plastic tire levers with carbon-fiber rims, as Reynolds specifically discourages the use of metal tire levers. They come with end cap spacers for 12x142mm or 10x135mm rear axles, and 9, 15, or 20mm front axles.
