We all know that upgrading your wheels is among the quickest ways to improve the handling of your bike, and the team at Reynolds had that in mind when designing the AM Carbon 27.5-inch wheelset. Benefitting from years at the forefront of developing carbon hoops, Reynolds has managed to offer up a wheelset that's tough enough for the highest levels of enduro racing, while weighing in around a startlingly low1620 grams. In other words, they're XC race light, but at a whopping 23mm internal width, the rims are ready to handle huge rubber and smash fast runs down rough trails.

The biggest update to the AM Carbon wheelset is the high modulus carbon AM rim. They're 31mm wide at the outside, and a generous 23mm internal, which means that they'll provide a stable platform for tires up to 2.5-inches wide. Tubeless compatibility has been continually refined, with an enhanced bead hook, and a deeper middle section that makes tire swaps a bit easier. Naturally, they provide the characteristically damp ride that you'd expect from a set of carbon rims, meaning that the benefits extend far beyond stiffness and superior strength. Furthermore, the extensive aerodynamic expertise of the team at Reynolds is on full display, meaning that these carbon hoops cut through the air with a bare minimum of drag.

They're laced to an all new Reynolds straight-pull disc hub that utilize replaceable end caps, making them compatible with most modern axle standards. The rear hub employs a redesigned alloy freehub, which places the pawls in the hub shell. This results in Reynolds increasing the size of the ratchet mechanism and thereby enhancing the durability. The hub shell is a straight-pull affair, which improves stiffness and makes replacing broken spokes a snap when the time comes. The svelte 1620g weight for a set makes them light enough for high-level cross country racing, but the considerable width and incredible strength makes them an ideal choice for enduro racing, or just blasting out laps on your favorite aggressive trails.

A nice feature of Reynolds' wheels is that they use a durable 28 hole, a three-cross lacing pattern, and a traditional spoke and nipple design for field service with easy truing and maintenance. The nipples are alloy for reduced rotational weight, and both front and rear spokes are straight pull DT-Swiss Revolution for high tension and total wheel strength.

And while the wheels are plenty tough, all Reynolds wheel owners are able to buy themselves some extra peace of mind by purchasing Reynolds' two-year damage protection plan. It's called RAP, which is short for Reynolds Assurance Plan. The insurance means that you'll have little fear that a crash will ruin your wheel investment. Find out more about it on the Reynolds Cycling site.

The Reynolds AM Carbon 27.5-inch Wheelset comes with a set of tubeless-ready valves for tubeless tires. Only use plastic tire levers with carbon-fiber rims — Reynolds specifically discourages the use of metal tire levers. The wheels are for disc brakes only and come with mounts for six-bolt rotors. Lastly, the wheels ship with end cap spacers for 12x142mm or 10x135mm, 9mm, 15mm, or 20mm axles.

  • Tubeless-ready
  • High modulus carbon AM rim (31mm external width, 23mm internal width)
  • Accommodates up to 2.5-inch tire width
  • DT-Swiss Revolution front, rear spokes (28 spokes at each wheel)
  • Comes with end cap spacers for 12x142mm, 10x135mm, 15mm, 9mm, or 20mm axles

Great Wheels

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

After a full season of riding on these I feel confident giving them 5 stars. Last year I rode Enves all season, and became extremely spoiled by how incredible they were. This year building up my bike I decided I definitely had to stick with carbon, but wanted to explore other options both out of curiosity and frugality. I landed on these, and after putting them through all kinds of conditions I have been extremely happy. They feel very similar to the Enves as far as speed and responsiveness goes, and the hubs have been solid. I think I actually prefer these hubs to the DT 240s I had on my Enves. The end caps are easier to swap out (my dt 240s had threaded end caps that came crazy tight from the factory), the freehub sound is loud enough to make your presence known but not overboard, and the engagement feels great.

I would highly recommend carbon wheels to anyone if they have the luxury of affording it. If you can't afford it then ride aluminum wheels and enjoy, they are totally fine. But if you can, carbon is awesome. I would also highly recommend considering these for your carbon wheels. Mine have stayed perfectly true all summer, no loose spokes or any problems at all.

So from what you are saying they are comparable to the Enves?
Are they compatible with the Sram XX 11speed and what else is needed to accommodate that? Thanks!

Responded on

I would say they are very comparable to Enves. Sure Enves might be better, but it's definitely splitting hairs if you ask me as far as performance goes. You just need to buy the Reynolds XD driver to convert for a sram 11 speed cassette. We have them, but are sold out right now so I would recommend calling up our chatting our customer service to see how quickly we could get you one.

What model year are these wheels? Would the Reynolds part number for the driver be, Part Number: 21290 just to verify?

Responded on

To be honest I'm not a bike component expert I work in our softgoods department, but I believe this is a 2015 wheelset. Regardless, yes you have the correct part number it is the newer ratchet style freehub used on (I believe) 2014 and newer reynolds hubs. If you decide this is the wheelset for you please feel free to call up our customer service folks, we have a cycling-specific team of reps who are super good at this stuff and can guarantee you get the exact right stuff the first time around. Happy trails Bill!
