For years, now, the pursuit of carbon has been reserved for the 'racer.' Collectively, this subset has treated the mere idea of the carbon clincher with nothing short of disdain. However, the question begs to be asked, why? As a collection of old hats, we can say that we all rely on what we know. And if you've been active in road racing, what you know are tubulars. But this is simply a survival mechanism that isn't hinged on any real logic. We were made painfully aware of our perceptive flaws after a lengthy conversation with lead Reynolds engineer, Paul Lew. Through his expansive knowledge, our fears were laid to rest, and we were all clambering to experience the ride quality of the Reynolds Attack Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset.
The Attack wheels have a 29mm full-carbon clincher rim that shares the same shape and brake track as Reynolds higher-end Thirty Two Wheelset, only at a price that's far easier to swallow. However, their differences aren't easy to spot with the naked eye. Instead of the Thirty Two's DT Swiss hubs, Aerolite bladed spokes, and gram-crunching carbon layup, the Attack favors a simplified, slightly heavier carbon lay-up, bladed DT Swiss AeroComp spokes, and Reynolds Racing straight-pull hubs. All in all, though, the change in configuration and manufacturing only accounts 70 gram difference per set. So, the Attack remains adept at the trait of its namesake, attacking. And at shallow 29mm rim depth and at around an overall weight of 1365 grams, the Attack will make its presence known during fierce battles on arduous climbs.
Previously, we mentioned the brake track. Reynolds calls it CTg — Cryo for cold, Tg for glass transition temperature. Unless you've been paying attention to the rides of carbon clinchers, you probably don't know why we're emphasizing this. Heat build-up is an issue that dogs all carbon-fiber rims, and in some cases, a poorly-designed rim has overheated, deforming the rim and literally exploding the tire. This is something no one ever wants to see happen. Accordingly, Reynolds has engineered a new laminate that can withstand more heat without breaking down — around 100 degrees Fahrenheit extra, actually. And along with the rim developments, Reynolds also designed its own brake pads. The result is a safer wheel that brakes more consistently, and should leave you with no worries about the rim overheating on long, technical descents.
For the build, there are 20 radial-laced front spokes and 24 two-cross-drive and radial non-drive rear. The alloy nipples are hidden inside the rim for a sleeker profile to the wind. They're able to be adjusted with a Reynolds-specific internal spoke wrench that is included with the wheels.
The Reynolds Attack Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset is available in the color Black with White labels and in a clincher configuration. The wheels are being offered in either a Shimano or Campagnolo freehub compatibility, and the Shimano option is compatible with Shimano 11-speed shift systems.
Please note that the wheels include two pairs of Reynolds' Cryo-Blue brake pads. Neglecting to use these pads in favor of anything else will void your warranty.
