Specific.

Some cyclists have very specific tastes. We're cyclists, too, so we get that. Reynolds gets it, too, and the Assault SLG Disc Carbon Tubular Wheelset is a very specific tool for a very specific application for a borderline obsessive cyclist. The 41mm-deep rim is just enough to negate the wind, the bullet-shaped inner face maintains stability to keep the wheels from becoming turbulent sails in crosswinds, disc brakes provide consistent braking with no pulsing or fading, and tubular tires — compared to clinchers — are superlative in every category we look for: plush, grippy, and oh-so pro.

Those specifics aside, the Assault Disc Brake Tubs enjoy all the same tech and properties of their more generic stablemates. This includes their hot selling point: Reynolds' Enhanced SLG (Swirl Lip Generator) rim design. SLG is a 0.9mm lip of carbon just inside of the rim's brake track that smooths airflow as it passes to the tapered spoke face. Reynolds claims that tests at the A2 Wind Tunnel confirm that SLG translates to a 12.5 second gain over a distance of 40 kilometers — a 35% improvement. Testing also shows that SLG reduces drag by a claimed 20% at a yaw angle of 10 degrees. Since we spend most of our time in the saddle at yaw angles hovering around 10 degrees, the Assault's Advanced SLG is most effective at angles we need it most.

By combining disc brakes with the proprietary PR3 carbon construction method, Reynolds has hit levels of safety heretofore unrealized by carbon rims. PR3 uses different fibers, epoxy, and resin for each of five rim regions in order to maximize strength while keeping weight down. Disc brakes eliminate the issues associated with carbon braking: no grab, fading, and the dreaded deformation caused by rims heating up to the glass transition point. Instead, the Assault Discs net braking that's consistent, virtually eliminates lock-up, and is immediately responsive, even when debris and rain would leave rim brakes grabbing uselessly for a full rotation in order to clear the brake track before grabbing.

Finally, and though it's been around for a couple of generations now, we'd be remiss not to call attention to the Assault's 25mm-wide rim. Reynolds calls this width "modern," but we call it "less rolling resistance, better cornering, and a more comfortable ride." The wider rim straightens tire sidewalls that would otherwise bulge out to a lightbulb shape, letting the tire deform around obstacles instead of bouncing across them, putting more rubber on the tarmac while cornering, and running less PSI for even more comfort — all of which just complements the essential ride characteristics of tubs.
