Braking power.

While carbon wheels are a popular choice among cyclists for their stiff yet comfortable ride qualities, many wheelsets are plagued with unpredictable braking — especially with any hint of rain. The Reynolds Assault SLG Disc Carbon Wheelset solves all the braking issues with CenterLock disc brakes for more control and predictability than traditional road brakes when scrubbing speed in any weather.

The Assault SLGs can be set up with traditional clincher tires and tubes, and are tubeless-ready for riders looking to drop the tube weight and work with a wider range of tire pressure options. Wide rims give the tire beads a wider stance for increased comfort and stability, and less chance of pinch flats compared to wheels with narrower rims for both clincher and tubeless setups.

Reynolds also includes its Enhanced Swirl Lip Generator (SLG) in this wheelset. There's a lot of wind tunnel tech behind it, but in a nutshell Reynolds added a small lip of carbon under the braking track that streamlines airflow across the spokes to reduce drag. Long story short, SLG just makes these wheels faster.

  • PR3 Carbon fiber rims
  • Tubeless-ready rims can also be used as clincher
  • Wide, 17mm internal rim width
  • 41mm rim depth for aerodynamics
  • SLG technology reduces wind drag
  • Compatible with CenterLock disc brakes

Tough to mount clincher cyclocross tires

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Not sure what it is about these wheels, but I have a very tough time mounting clincher cyclocross tires on this wheel (same tires that are no problem on my stock wheels). Made even harder when i got a flat on a ride and couldn't get the tire back over the lip. Going to try tubeless set up to see if that will help the situation.

My set came with thru-axle caps, BTW.

Unanswered Question

I have the same question as Kyle below, still unanswered from April 2015. Are thru-axle end-caps available for this wheel set? And if so, does your store have them? The Reynolds website states they come with the wheel set:
12mm & 15 TA Front and 142x12mm TA Rear

Looks great and spins fast

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great set of wheels. I was looking to upgrade from stock Mavic Aksium Discs to something lighter and more aero. At almost 1lb lighter, these wheels make my bike feel faster and the wheels seem to just keep spinning. I also like the aero profile of the Reynolds, not just for the looks, but also I was pleasantly surprised to not be blown around by strong crosswinds. I assumed the deeper rims would make the crosswinds worse, but I have yet to encounter any problems! When I weighed the rims, they came out just a hair heavier than advertised, around 30 grams more for the set, but still under 1600 grams. Wheels arrived true and didn't require any additional maintenance. From the reviews I read, the 2014s had some issues with the decals, I'm glad to see that it appears they have resolved it with the 2015s. Would definitely buy again.
