Clinchers for your disc obsession.

Reliability and practicality are two hallmarks of clincher wheels. However, until recent years, the argument could have been made that carbon clinchers didn't embody either of these characteristics, whatsoever. But, with its Assault SLG Disc Brake Carbon Clincher Disc Brake Wheelset, Reynolds has addressed and solved the common issues of high weights, flexibility, and of course, braking. Now, the Assaults deliver a carbon clincher with a competitive weight and rigidity that's on par with nearly any set of tubulars.

Sitting near the top of its "Performance" line, Reynolds constructed the Assault's rim from its PR3 Hybrid Carbon. As a result, the wheels tip the scales around a feathery 1565 grams. This places them just around 60 grams over the Reynolds Forty Six Aero clinchers, however, both wheels share a nearly identical mold, measuring out to a maximum width of 25mm and a rim depth of 41mm. For reference this new shape makes the Assault a little broader and shorter than last year's Assault. So, back in relation to the Forty Six, while aerodynamics and stability rank rather evenly, the ride characteristics differ in response to the Assault's slightly heavier carbon layup, although the Assault still features an impressive stiffness-to-weight ratio. Additionally, you'll find that the Assault controls price by opting for Reynolds' disc hubs over DT Swiss, and DT Swiss AeroComp spokes instead of DT Aerolites. But the 60 gram differential adds little to the rotational weight department. So, the wheels still roll up to speed quickly, and demand less user-force to keep them there when compared to weightier carbon clinchers.

And while the two wheels are differentiated by a few variables, both wheels are constructed with the same proprietary carbon technology, only varying in the layup. The recipe consists of three technologies — Hybrid Modulus Laminate (HLM), Variable Resin Chemistry (VRC), and Inert Gas Compaction (IGC). Basically, these three systems work harmoniously to construct the Assault. HLM is a method used to assign specific carbons and layups at different points of the rim. So, through this method, Reynolds placed different carbons and layups at the tire channel, brake track, side wall, internal nipple bed, and spoke face. Then, with VRC, Reynolds' exclusive resins bond the different laminates into a single structure. And lastly, IGC is used to mold and cure the rim in what Reynolds deems as the most ideal of environments. As a result of this construction process, the Assault is strengthened at a strategic points, and benefits from a light overall weight. Additionally, the wheel's layup provides higher levels of lateral and torsional rigidity under load than prior iterations.

However, the most important difference is, of course, the Assault's six-bolt ISO rotor compatibility. By being designed for disc brakes, Reynolds has removed the most common complaint of carbon clinchers from the equation — sketchy braking. And because of the new disc design, it's important to note that the rear hub features 135mm spacing.

Another point of note is that the Assault now features Reynolds' proprietary Swirl Lip Generator, or SLG, that's found on its RZR line of wheels. It's easy to miss, but the leading edge of the rim features a 0.9mm lip in order to widen it near the spoke face. Accordingly, this minimizes pressure drag by reducing side forces on the rim, leaving room for responsiveness and weight to be the paramount characteristics of the Thirty Two. And along these lines, you'll find that the wheels roll up to speed quickly, and demand less user-force to keep them there. Additionally, its exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio guarantees a nimble reaction to your force when you jump to pin down a climbing break.

For the actual build, Reynolds used 24 spokes for the front and rear in a two-cross pattern. These have been laced to Reynolds Road Straight Pull hubs that are six-bolt ISO rotor compatible. Securing the wheels are steel-shafted quick-release skewers.

The Reynolds Assault SLG Disc Brake Carbon Clincher Wheelset is available in the color Black and in a clincher configuration. Please note that the freehub body is only Shimano compatible, and that the rear hub is spaced to 135mm. And given that Assault's nipples are now external, there's no need for Reynolds' internal spoke wrench for truing adjustments.
