Reynolds MTN R29 XC Wheelset $725.00
Light, smooth, and tough.
In cross country circles, 29-inch wheels have taken over as the wheel size of choice. And while the improved rolling characteristics are undeniable, increasing wheel size also increases weight and flex. Luckily for you, Reynolds has taken it upon itself to build a lightweight, stiff, and durable wheelset that it calls the R29 XC. Built on an all new hub design that's compatible with all major hub standards, while also featuring a newly redesigned rim, the setup comes in at around 1600 grams for the set. But despite the light weight, these wheels are ready for long seasons of hammering on your favorite trails.
The news with the R29 XC wheelset is a brand new rim. They're 25mm wide at the outside, and they feature a generous 20mm internal width. This means that they'll provide a supple, round profile for your cross country tire of choice. Tubeless compatibility has also been refined, with an enhanced bead hook and a deeper middle section that makes tire swaps a bit easier. Furthermore, the extensive aerodynamic experience from Reynolds' composite wheels program makes its way into the R series alloy rims, which means that these hoops cut through the air with a bare minimum of drag.
They're laced to an all new Reynolds straight-pull disc hub that utilize replaceable end caps, making them compatible with most modern axle standards. The rear hub employs a redesigned alloy freehub that places the pawls in the hub shell, and by doing so, Reynolds was able to increase the size of the ratchet mechanism to enhance the durability. The hub shell is a straight-pull affair, which improves both stiffness and ease of service. However, on of the most noteworthy features of this hub set is its adaptability to nearly any axle standard. Both the front and rear hubs employ push-on end caps, which makes swapping from a quick-release skewer to a modern thru-axle a simple affair. Reynolds even included a complete set of end caps, including 9mm, 15mm, and 20mm end caps for the front hub. And at the rear hub, you'll find 10x135mm and 12x142mm end caps. This means that you're able to run these wheels on nearly any bike, both now and into the future.
A nice feature of Reynolds wheels is that they use a durable 28 hole, three-cross lacing pattern, while a traditional spoke and nipple design makes field service and truing a simple process. The nipples are alloy for reduced rotational weight, and both front and rear spokes are straight-pull DT Swiss for high tension and total wheel strength.
And while the wheels are plenty tough, all Reynolds wheel owners are able to buy themselves some extra peace of mind by purchasing Reynolds' two-year damage protection plan. It's called RAP, which is short for Reynolds Assurance Plan. The insurance means that you'll have little fear that a crash will ruin your wheel investment.
The Reynolds R29 XC wheelset is available in one size and in the color Black.
