Harness your power.

You've been hearing about the benefits of training with a power meter from your ride buddies for a few years now, and we don't blame you if you've found it exhausting to sort through the plethora of hyperbole from manufacturers claiming to have the best power meters on the market. For whatever reason you've found yourself here, looking at Quarq's SRAM Red BB30 Power Meter Crank Arms, and we can say that if you'd like to blend a self-sponsored price tag with pro-level training functionality, this power meter is the place to start.

Any power meter will employ a slightly different "thinking" mechanism to actually measure watts, and in the case of the Red Power Meter, the thinking is carried out by five strain gauges strategically arranged throughout the Exogram Hollow spider. They continuously work to measure the Newton meters you're driving into the pedals, and they do so with a claimed accuracy of +/-1.5%, which is 0.5% more accurate than many meters on the market. Quarq decided to make them ANT+ compatible as well, so you won't have to deal with swapping out head units or wearables to adapt the crank arms to your existing setup.

Taking into account that most of us have a stronger leg, the SRAM Red crank arms use proprietary Power Balance technology to chart the power you're generating in both crank arms separately, giving you the advantage of being able to analyze weak spots in each leg as you ride familiar climbs and tackle grueling interval sets. Rather than include a battery setup that requires a full range of tools or needs to be mailed in to be changed, the batteries on the Red crankset have over 300 hours of life, and once they run out, they require no tools to be swapped for a fresh battery.

One of the most notable features of the Red crank arms is their 10k dynamic temperature compensation feature, which was developed to address power meters' weakness in the face of rapidly rising or falling temperatures. Having to stop and back-pedal in the middle of a tempo ride or worse, when you're grinding up a steep climb at low speed, is not only extremely frustrating, it makes gathering realistic data on training rides almost impossible. Whether you live in a climate with fluctuating temperatures or not, having this feature means that the crank arms will auto-adjust along 10,000 pre-programmed data points between zero and 130 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing you to keep your focus on the road without experiencing drift.

Not content with just solving the temperature conundrum, Quarq took things a bit further and equipped the unit's internals to handle being submerged in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, which should be more than any storm you ride through throws at you. Quarq finishes the Red Power Meter Crank Arms with the types of classic computer features that make it easy to adapt to your training routine, measuring cadence with an AxCad accelerometer and integrating easily with various training software, including Training Peaks WKO+, Training Peaks, Golden Cheetah, and Strava.
