Close the gap.

Quarq's GXP Riken R Power Meter Crank Arms enjoy all the same peloton-worthy functions and features of the pricier Elsa model except for Power Balance, which means that they don't generate readings for both crank arms separately. Unless you're planning on closing the gap to the tête de la corse with one leg, this shouldn't affect your ability to incorporate the Riken's industry-leading accuracy of +/- 1.5% into your cycling routine to make sure you're training is on track and you don't spend too much time in the red while making that critical jump to the lead group.

The Riken R system communicates data to your head unit via ANT+ wireless, so your current computer is likely already compatible with it, and Quarq's OmniCal power measurement technology means the accuracy of those measurements are independent of the chainrings so you can quickly swap it between your road, 'cross, and tri setups without worrying about compatibility. The battery is also consumer compatible, by which we mean you can replace it yourself without tools instead of mailing it in to the manufacturer as with other, less user-friendly systems.

Quarq addresses the tendency for power meters to succumb to the gremlins of re-zeroing in extreme temperatures by building the Riken with its 10K dynamic temperature compensation feature. 10K is an auto-adjust schedule that Quarq developed by mapping around 10,000 data points to record how the unit responds to temperatures ranging from zero to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The power meter uses this information to effect minimal drift — even when the mercury falls — so you can focus on turning the cranks instead of babysitting them.

It measures cadence with an AxCad accelerometer, and it's compatible with various training software such as Training Peaks WKO+, Training Peaks, Golden Cheetah, and Strava. In a final bit of comical excess, Quarq designed the system to be waterproof for 30 minutes while submerged under one meter of water. While you'll probably never need this level of survivability, we suppose that it's nice to know it's there. Just in case.

Please note that the Riken R is only compatible with GXP bottom brackets and SRAM 10- and 11-speed and Shimano 10-speed drivetrains. For 11-speed Shimano compatibility, check out the Elsa RS model.
