I bought the phantom last October, and rode all winter. (I ride to work unless there is a blizzard on - then I drive my Jeep.)
The first thing I noticed was the jacket's performance in wind - I could ride 2 - 3 mph faster in the same wind. It was marvelous. Of course as it got colder I added layers. And I logged miles, time, temp, wind, clothing, and comfort. I added a base layer at 40 degrees, a Garneau long sleeved cold weather shirt at 30. I was comfortable down to 20 degrees. I was cool starting out, but in ten minutes was comfortable, and in fifteen was undoing zippers to vent the heat. Below 20 degrees, sadly, I substituted another coat.
I love the Phantom - and I'm starting my second winter with it.
I am looking for a rain jacket to wear as an added layer. I have a Gore Phantom XXL which fits comfortably; I would wear the rain jacket as a shell over the Gore. Should I go for the XXL or 3XL?
I have a Gore Phantom that is not completely waterproof. I am looking for a waterproof breathable shell to wear over it. Would this jacket work?
I am a big guy (wear XL shirts; dress shirts 17.5 neck). I have taken up commuting on a bike, about 12 miles round trip. I love it and have lost 25 pounds, and want to ride through the winter - until the temps get so could that it becomes difficult to breathe. Is the phantom the right jacket? Can I use it alone or with layers? Should I get XL or XXL for layering?
I am looking for a riding jacket to wear in temperatures from 40 down to 20 degree. I am comparing this Pearl Isumi Elite Thermal Barrier Jacket, the Cutter Softshell Anorak, and the Gore Bike Wear Phantom. My logic is that these will will work with layers. I want to know how they really compare.
