Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This Garmin unit is a perfect cyclist GPS unit. Granted, it is very expensive. However Competitive Cyclists offered it 25% off for the bundle so I ordered one. Came within the 3-5 days and I've been nothing but happy with my purchase. Very impressed with Competitive Cyclists!
The GPS signal seems way better than that of my Garmin Edge 500 and Forerunner 210 units. All the display options on the 800 are very helpful and fun to use. The navigation is a really cool function especially for longer rides. The thing I've enjoyed the most from upgrading to the 800 is the color touch screen. It's so easy to use and makes the riding experience even more enjoyable (if that were possible :p ).
The only problem I've come across is with the HR monitor and I've had the same problem with all of my other Garmin products. The HR monitor will spike with increased speed. It can be frustrating when I'm training and trying to use my HR to guide my workout. However I've found that it gets better when I don't dry my jerseys in the drying, always air dry! Besides it's better for the clothes anyways.
My Garmin 800 also took a while to locate the satellites. I ended up having to hard reset the unit and go to an open hill. After the initial 'locating satellites' that took approximately 10-15 minutes, it has located them within 15-30 seconds every time after.
If the navigation function isn't something you'd find useful then maybe go with something more like the Garmin 510 which still has the touch/color screen for a cheaper price.
Overall I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it to any cyclist with some extra cash to blow.
