If you haven't tried single speed yet, know it is different than just using one cog "like, all the time." It is using one cog all the time. And it ain't easy. It often means powering up every hill and spinning out down every dip. That results in more fun than can be explained easily. The bike is a good deal lighter after the extra cogs, chainrings, derailleurs, cables, housing, and extra chain has been shorn from the steed. And there's less to maintain, break, and replace.

The simplest way to explain the allure is that once the single speed is set up, the mind is freed from taking mental energy to decide which gear is best and worrying when you don't have the right one or that the bike isn't shifting perfectly because of either cable wear, chain wear, cog wear, pulley issues, gunk, lube, time of day, etc. Put it on a bike with a rigid fork and traditional double-triangle frame, and the bike will take you back to the roots of cycling. Flannel shirts and outrageous facial hair optional. Or, it's a simple conversion to turn that old bike into the around town cruiser.
