It's a rare pleasure to know that the equipment you're riding is indisputably the finest that money can buy. "Best" is almost always a debatable point -- but in this instance there is zero argument whatsoever. The Mavic iO Track Front Wheel is unquestionably tantalizing. Its five-spoke carbon fiber design is synonymous with elite level track competition, and it has won numerous Olympic (17 Golds in Bejing alone) and world Championships medals since its unveiling just before the Atlanta Olympics.
Mavic spent hundreds of hours in the wind tunnel to better understand the factors that affect drag -- spokes, rims, hubs, tires -- and the overall design of the iO (most visible in its five asymmetric profiled spokes) is the manifestation of their knowledge. It is molded in one piece with woven 3K carbon fiber throughout. The monocoque construction process allows Mavic to make it extremely stiff to resist deflection that would rob power from the rider. At the same time, they can exercise precise control over the amount of fabric and resin used. By minimizing the materials, they've maximized the lightness for blistering acceleration.
Of course, aerodynamics for a wheel like this are of utmost importance, but that doesn't mean that Mavic forgot about the bearings at the heart of the iO. Their QRM sealed cartridge bearings are renowned for their smoothness, and the iO front hub benefits from an oversized aluminum axle. The hex cap screws that fix the wheel to the fork sit inside knurled finish washers that guarantee a secure attachment.
The Mavic iO Track Front Wheel is intended for track use only. While you'll see the occasional rider in the Tour de France on an iO front wheel, those are prototypes different from the iO you see here(!) They are 700c tubular only. It comes with fixing nuts, and valve extender.
