Long travel is fun for everyone, and these days it seems that 29er riders have more choices than ever -- frames, tires, and wheels. Fox adds this 34 TALAS 29 140 FIT RLC Fork to their line to satisfy this growing segment of riders. Where their existing 32mm 29er forks worked well at 120mm travel, the move to 140mm necessitated some changes, hence the new Fox 34 platform.
Among other considerations, a tube's stiffness is dependent upon its diameter. Don't believe us? Scrounge up an old bike with a first gen suspension fork (think Mag 21 or Manitou). Even with a measly 75mm of travel, those were noodles compared to modern forks. So for the jump to 140mm on their 29er forks, Fox bumped the diameter of the upper tubes to 34mm in order to maintain an acceptable level of steering precision, stiffness, durability, and safety for hard charging big-wheeled riders.
Perhaps more for this fork than any other, the TALAS feature is a boon. Click it down to 110mm to stand and climb with efficiency and optimized weight balance for good traction. Click it back up to 140mm of full travel after the climb to steamroll through rock gardens on the way down. It's that easy and it's a great feature for varied terrain.
The TALAS 29 air spring is tuned for a more linear feel, giving you a sensation of incredibly smooth small bump response and access to the full range of travel, yet you'll still get no harsh bottoming. It's designed to be run at slightly lower pressures for a decreased breakaway force. Combine this spring rate curve with the Kashima Coat on the upper tubes and this fork is super sensitive to even the most minute trail chatter. The golden hued coating starts with a raw aluminum stanchion. Then they add molybdenum disulfide via an induction process that deposits the material into pores in the surface to the effect of 70 billion pores per cm˛. The MoS₂ adds lubricity, extending the life of the tubes as well as greatly reducing friction to make the ride super smooth.
The FIT cartridge damper seals the fluid inside a rubber bladder to eliminate the chance of fluid aeration and subsequent variations in the damping properties. And, because it uses less fluid, it shaves considerable weight from the TALAS 29 Forks. The bladder allows for internal fluid volume changes and works to maintain suspension consistency when you're really giving the fork a workout. With the FIT RLC damper, you'll get a rebound adjustment as well as a low speed compression dial, lockout lever, and a lockout force adjust knob, allowing you to control the desired amount of blowoff when the fork is locked out. The wide range of adjustment for the compression and rebound settings make this fork highly tunable for a wide variety of terrain and riding styles. And for those who ride with long-fingered gloves, you'll be glad to know that the redesigned lockout lever is easier to use than ever.
The Fox 34 TALAS 29 140 FIT RLC Fork is Black and has 140mm of travel. It's configured for a 15QR thru-axle (axle included) and has a 1-1/8" to 1.5" tapered steerer. At the bottom of the lowers are lightweight post-mounts for your disc brake that accept a direct mount for a 160mm caliper. To make installation easy and for a clean look, there's also n integrated brake hose guide on the fork arch.
