The DT Swiss EXC 400 Carbon Rim is a composite alternative to their EX 500 aluminum all-mountain rim, and it's 100 grams lighter. The intended usage is similar, however, the lighter weight and carbon fiber composite materials dictate a few special structural details to make this superlight rim super durable. Just how tough are these rims? Guys like Jared Graves, Sam Hill and Aaron Gwin stake their livelihood on them.
Since it's all uni-directional carbon fiber, the engineers at DT have the freedom to dissect the expected forces and align all of the fabric during the molding process to combat any unwanted flex in the rim. The cross section of the EXC 400 uses a double wall shape with a cool hidden detail -- a vertical bridge connects the inner and outer walls. The result of tying the walls together is a remarkably stable rim structure that can resist both the tensional stresses from the spokes and the bump forces from impacts on the trail. It's a disc brake-only design, and the sidewalls are as short as possible to make it strong and trail-ready. Each of the spokes holes have a stainless steel insert to help spread the stress loads away from the spoke hole. These inserts also guarantee that the spoke nipples will seat properly and turn easily during the wheel building and truing process.
The DT Swiss EXC 400 Carbon Rim is lighter than most cross-country rims, yet is tough enough to handle the rigors of riding just about anywhere you please. It has a clear coated uni-directional carbon fiber finish with red and white decals. It's 29.4mm wide, so it will accept tires up to 2.5" with no problem. They come drilled for 32 spokes. Claimed weight is 400g.
