Rapha gives them the same cut as their standard Trousers, and that means they've got a few key details that make them equally suited for riding or relaxing. One performance detail that we like is the pocket design. First, the slash style front pockets are easy to access on the bike. Think about it, flat cut pockets are impossible when you're leaning towards the bars. That's not the case here. So if you need to slide out your phone as you ride to see if you're on time, it's no problem. What can be a problem (thankfully Rapha addressed it) with this style of pockets is that you can lose change, keys, or even small phones. However, Rapha's
clever fix involves an inward-sewn flap. You can find it on the right pocket, and it catches anything that might succumb to gravity when you're on the bike and/or the tractor beam-like effect of the cracks between cushions when you put your legs up in the evening. As an added cool detail, the flap has an embroidered Rapha logo on it.
Secondly, they have special panels on the inside of the thighs, and the seams are shifted away from any areas that have potential for chafing. The knees are softly articulated for a natural feel, and Rapha adds gripper material inside the waistband to keep the Softshell Trousers from creeping down as you ride. Lastly, a microfiber fabric is used inside the crotch because it's soft, but by no means is it a chamois or cushion of any sort. It's just not scratchy against your skin.
The Softshell fabric is windproof and water resistant. In fact, theses trousers have sealed seams that enable them to provide a degree of protection from rainstorms and wet roads that you might expect only from true rain pants. The big difference is… these look good.
