Favorite MTB Helmet!

POC was originally a little known company out of Sweden that set out to do one thing, make the best helmet protection for athletes by questioning the status quo in regards to what is considered a safe helmet. The problem with most modern day helmets is they are good at direct impact injuries. Imagine head butting a tree, that’s a direct impact injury. However, most injuries (especially in the outdoor world) are rotational and not direct. Imagine riding your bike and suddenly your front wheel dives into a massive hole. Your mass in most situations doesn’t hit a wall and stop suddenly, your head may hit but your body in a violent display of physics keeps moving. This is where MIPS comes in.

The Trabec Race MIPS solves the rotational problem by distributing you impact in a rotational injury. How is this accomplished? Surprisingly by a simple plastic lightweight cage that’s intended to imitate your brains way of protecting itself in a rotational injury. Studies show it works and hey, that’s pretty cool in my book to give my most valued asset a fighting chance against my activities.

The helmet itself does not claim to be the most breathable, it does not claim to be the lightest, and it certainly doesn’t claim to be bro’er then thou (I’m looking at you Giro & Smith) but what it does claim to be is the best open face helmet protection money can buy for your bike. POC will stand by this and I will as well with two wrecks. The helmet did as it was suppose to, I only walked away with cracked helmets and no concussions.

Sizing - As far as sizing the M/L will work with most normal sized adult male heads. If you think you have a super small head (note the small looks tiny) or a massive noggin size up or down but for the most part the sizing has a massive range and will accommodate most.

Color - An age old question we get is will the white produce less heat then the black color? Science proves that due to the thickness of protection on most helmets there is no discernible temperature change with a white vs black helmet. Unlike a simple black shirt, a helmet is very thick and will not translate heat directly to your head.

Poor Quality Manufacturing

Ordered this helmet twice and both time the strap was not attached to the helmet. Its a snap/click system that wasn't engaging. Not going for a third time and returned it. Will try another MIPs helmet from another manufacturer.

Hi Brain, Did POC address the problem or even Back Country what did they tell you if you don't mind sharing if they said anything at all.

Nice helmet. Very comfortable and cool.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was a little apprehensive spending this much on a helmet, but I have to say it is very comfortable and nicely fitting. I have a fairly big head (7 1/2 hat size) and the XL/XXL fits perfect. The MIPS is supposed to be good for impact, and feels very durable, but I thankfully haven't had to impact test it yet. My old helmet was just a road helmet and I wanted to get something more mountain specific. Took a bit to get used to the larger size compared to the road helmet, but I do feel more protected. It also vents nicely. My old helmet would heat up a lot on long hot climbs, but the POC doesn't at all. All in all I am very happy with the purchase, and I may get a road biking specific POC helmet as well, I just have to save up a while ;)

Great, protective mountain bike helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this helmet after suffering a concussion from a less-protective helmet. Luckily I haven't had any hard falls yet with this helmet, but with the MIPS system I know I will be protected. The helmet is very comfortable and the chin stay in much more comfortable on my jaw than any other helmet I have used.

Nice Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this helmet because I suffered multiple concussions over the past few years and want all the protection I can get, after reading about the MIPS technology I figured it was worth a shot to give this a try.

It fits me great and I don't even notice the helmet when I am riding, my head circumference is 22in and the M/L fits just fine

Love it - once I got the right size

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My head is 23 1/4" which is between the M/L and XL/XXL size guides on the Size? popup here, but closer to the XL/XXL, so I ordered that. It was way too big. The M/L fits perfectly, with the adjustable band set right in the middle. So I believe these helmets run a little larger than the sizing guide. My wife also got a M/L and loves the fit - her head is 23".

It's the most comfortable bicycle helmet I've ever worn - snug, but without pressure points that get uncomfortable after a few hours. It's a bit heavier than the Giro I was wearing, but not objectionably so. The ventilation is great - very welcome on hot days.

I'd recommend it highly even if it didn't have Mips (Multi-directional Impact Protection System).

POC Trabec Helmet

I've tried on my fair share of helmets and the inside fit on this thing is so perfect. There is a full inside cage system that makes sure your helmet is sitting correctly on your head. This helmet runs true to size. The breathability is comparable to other helmets I own, but lets be honest here- you're going to sweat your ass off biking so why not look good / better with this on your head.

Love this helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The one thing that attracted me to this helmet was the fit. I always purchase a medium and m/l fit perfect. It is well ventilated despite the appearance. Straps are kept inside the helmets structure which give the helmet a super clean look. Love it so far!

Trabec Race MIPS sizing is not accurate

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

My head size is 56 cm. So when I ordered the POC Trabec Race Mips Helmet, I ordered the med/lrg which states it fits heads that are between 55 and 58 cm. When the helmet arrived, it wouldn't fit on my head even with the adjustment fully opened. I returned this item, and then ordered the xl/xxl which states it fits heads that are between 59-62 cm. When the helmet arrived, it was too large for my head even with the adjustment fully closed. I returned this item too. I really wanted to like this helmet due to it's safety features and styling.

Fits different that the regular Trabec

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have a small head, size 7, 21 7/8. This puts me right in between small and medium on most helmets. I tried on a regular Trabec Race locally and a small was a good comfortable fit when almost expanded to its max. When I got the Trabec Race Mips, it was too small. The mips liner takes up space in the normal helmet, and doesn't allow for the helmet to fit as far down on your head as the normal Trabec. The mips lining is a full head cradle, and either the liner itself doesn't allow for the helmet to fully seat on the head or my head was not a perfect match to the mips mold so the helmet felt more suspended above my head than actually wearing it. It also had a tendency to grab your hair as you push it on your head and yank it. I really wanted to get something with a concussion resistant design, but the fit just wasn't good for me. I thought about trying a larger helmet, but being that the mips liner was such a different fit than the normal helmet, I decided to pass and got a Troy Lee A1. That is an super comfy fitting helmet and the back of the head coverage is noticeably better.

Didn't like the fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really wanted to like this but it fit very odd. Really high on my little head. Looks great though.

Saved my head

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I no doubt would have been in much worse shape if it hadn't been for the MIPS on this helmet. I still ended up with a pretty serious concussion, but I do believe the MIPS did its job and will have a hard time riding any other helmet in the future.

Fit is great, my head is a 59 or so and I ride the L/XL size and its almost fully tightened down, the helmet breathes well on hot Utah days, but offers more protection than a lot of other helmets on the market. I would highly suggest this helmet to those looking for the top of the line in protection.

I hava a Trabec Race (M/L) that fits...

I hava a Trabec Race (M/L) that fits perfectly! I went out looking for the MIPS and the M/L is tjght on the sides and the XL feels good in the smallest setting but kind of "slides" a little bit on the head (without feeling loose) front to back and side to side. They tell me this is normal on MIPS, is that correct? Should I get a larger size than usual on the MIPS model?

Responded on

That business about it "sliding a little bit on the head" sounds like salesman BS to me. The MIPS is about the interface between the helmet's internal parts: some internal rotation is allowed - to absorb rotational force in a glancing blow. I don't see how this would affect the standard safety guideline to get the smallest helmet size that fits comfortably.

I own the non-MIPS Trabec Race and have used it extensively for one season. It's comfort and ventilation compare well to, though don't quite equal my top-of-the-line Giro, considering that the Trabec offers some additional back-of-the-head coverage.

My only issue with the Trabec is that its design results in a really weird tri-hawk-style hat head (the cushion contacts the head as two longitudinal ribs). I ordered a Sweat Hawg velcro for this season, which I hope will take care of that.

MIPS makes it smaller.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I ordered this helmet when they had it in a M/L and it was too small. They made it with the MIPS system (good) but POC didn't make room for the MIPS plastic liner. The MIPS liner also squeaks very annoyingly on the styrofoam. Anyway... I sent it back. I'm not giving up tho.. I do plan on getting a MIPS Bike and Ski helmet.
