Loooove it

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using this vest for about 4 seasons now. I wear it every day... every single day. To me one of the most important features of safety equipment (other than performance obviously, which POC excels at) is comfort. As soon as your body heats up the VPD material conforms to your back incredibly well, like a glove, but on your spine, like a spine glove.. thing. I've never had a problem wearing it under my pack or my Poweder Guide Vest. Once it conforms to your back (takes about 5 minutes) it also retains that heat and acts somewhat like a heating pad. This is a big bonus on frigid days, but can cause a sweat storm in the spring.

I've taken some pretty solid tumbles since I've been wearing this vest. Nothing like a tree or rock directly to my spine (hoping not to test the vest to that level, knock on wood) but a handful of "oh sh&#" moments where I instinctively try to take the impact of the crash to my back. Typically I've stood up after, said "damn that was scary" and continued on my way feeling stoked to have this extra padding. No piece of safety equipment will turn you into roboskier where you're immune to any crash, but I feel this vest really has lessened the damage to my back from skiing significantly.

I'm 6'3 and skinny, about 180, and wear a Medium Regular. The VPD protection does not cover my low spine, which could be improved upon but then might lose the comfort value. Pairing them with the VPD Hip shorts might help this issue as well but I have not yet tried them out. I haven't really had problems with the vest riding up, when it does happen its minor and I barely notice it. It is kind of starting to smell though, maybe its time for me to upgrade to the VPD 2.0 with odor prevention technology, but for now I'm gonna continue wearing this vest every single day and can't recommend it enough. POC is the best when it comes to safety technology and this vest is no exception.

Unanswered Question

does this wear ok underneath a backpack?...

does this wear ok underneath a backpack? not a hiking pack, but a standard backcountry pack like the bd outlaw/covert/etc.?

any thoughts on sizing? I notice they offer a "slim" version that is not available at bc, what size would fit someone 6' and 160#?
