Like the evolution of 29ers, the mid-wheel has had its share of early adopters with a quick buck as the sole motivator. And while putting money in the bank keeps the bike world humming, it has flooded the market with questionable products. We're not going to name any guilty parties, but will happily point out that the extra time and resources put into Pivot's Mach 6 Carbon Mountain Bike Frame make it significantly more desirable then the numerous quick-fix 27.5's vying for your hard earned cash.


First off, the 155mm-travel Mach 6 features a top tube that's an inch to three-quarters of an inch longer than a similarly sized all-mountain bike. This reflects the larger frame/short stem/wide bar trend spearheaded by enduro racing. The idea is it provides stability at speed, without compromising handling. The problem, however, is that larger frames stretch the wheelbase and in actuality you're left with sixes.


Pivot, on the other hand, worked hard to keep the Mach 6's chainstays short -- so much so, they're a half inch or more shorter than a comparably sized 26in-wheeled all-mountain bike. If that's hard to wrap your head around, it has to do with the new clevis connecting the rear shock directly to the rear triangle. This allows suspension linkages and the rear triangle to be packed much more compactly for shorter chainstays and the resulting ideal wheelbase.


If you compare 27.5in bikes with contemporary 26in-developed suspension (the quick fix), you'll see the lengthy difference. When doing this, also take a look at the Mach 6's 13.6in bottom bracket height (that's low, again, for 26in standards) and compare it to other 27.5s and you'll see that the Mach 6's BB is nestled below the axles. This settles the center of gravity within the rolling stock (like 29ers) and not on top (like 26ers and rush-job 27.5s).


The long top tube, low center of gravity, and short stays combine to perfectly balance high-speed stability with the liveliness that new-school riders crave. Back to the venerable DW-Link suspension design, we'll spare you the anti-squat, climbs like a goat, descends with authority rhetoric and dive into what makes this DW-Link better than previous generations.


As mentioned before, a clevis is used to work around seat-tube interference problems that haunt other multi-link designs and permitted those cockle-warming, stubby stays. It also eliminates the rear shock bushing -- a quick-wearing maintenance headache and source of not only stiction, but slop too. The clevis is also connected to two large Enduro max cartridge bearings for strength and durability.


The design isn't going to limit shock options either, as it's not proprietary. Yet, you'll be relieved that a custom-tuned FLOAT X CTD guarantees the Mach 6's two carbon triangles play nicely together for fuss-free handling out of the box.


It'd be a shame to cover all these Mach 6 merits and ignore the carbon magic Pivot placed into this frame -- and it's the reason this bike can easily be spec'd to comfortably weigh in under the 29-pound mark. From the Mach 429, to the 5.7, to the LES, Pivot's been leading mountain bikes into the carbon realm. And, given the stack of journalism accolades along with numerous wins in competition, it's clear they're onto something.


That's due to not only to finite element analysis, but also real-world testing. The result is a compact carbon fiber frame that optimizes the ratio of strength vs. weight without compromising stiffness. Add to the picture every drool-worthy standard to date and you've got a winner. This includes BB92 with ISCG05 tabs, post-mount disc brakes, a tapered headtube, a 12x142mm thru-axle, and internally routed dropper-post compatibility.
