Description

Trail tamer.

Due to incredible weight savings over their aluminum counterparts, the long-travel carbon bike is becoming the ride of choice for Enduro and Super D racing. This makes it a perfect choice for those of us that want the most capable machine on descents --and then want it to effortlessly march back up the hill. Pivot's Mach 5.7 Carbon Mountain Bike Frame provides 145mm of proven DW-Link performance with a chassis that's a half pound lighter than its alloy stable mate.

Pivot knocked the frame weight down to 5 pounds (with the rear shock) by taking advantage of the latest molding technology. Sacrificial internal molds are used to provide better compaction of the laminate and to create a smoother inner surface. All of this adds up to a stronger and lighter bike without the wrinkles and excess resin that can plague intricate monocoque layups.

While the front triangle is noticeably smoother, the rear end is where you'll see the greatest differences in design, which is attributable to the use of carbon. Instead of two struts connecting the seat and chain stays, there's just one on the left side. And there isn't a seat stay bridge either. These changes help to increase the mud clearance over the alloy Mach 5.7 frame. Up front, it gets the same tapered head tube that allows Pivot designers to shape a massive down tube for steering stiffness.

There are a few other details that emphasize the efforts towards optimizing frame stiffness. One of the easiest to see is the BB92 PressFit-style bottom bracket. The extra width in the shell does two things. First, it allowed frame designers to connect a massive downtube and increase the width of the lower DW-Link , which increases stiffness and resistance to torsional flex. Secondly, it provides better support for the bottom bracket bearings.

Speaking of bearings, the forged and CNC-machined aluminum lower link contains eight sealed cartridge bearings -- two at each corner. This increases the durability of this pillar component, stretches service life, and optimizes suspension function. The upper link is made of carbon fiber for strength and light weight, and since it sees less stress than its lower counterpart, Pivot relies on four bearings -- rather than eight like the lower link -- to keep the suspension operating smoothly.

Out on the trail, the Mach 5.7 Carbon remains firm while hammering out of the saddle, yet glides over rocks, roots and ruts. It's possible to have both firm, efficient pedaling and bump compliance because of the DW-Link suspension's natural anti-squat characteristics. When you're on your bike, the center of mass is somewhere near your belly button. Every time you accelerate, this mass shifts rearward, loading the rear suspension. DW-Link counteracts this transfer to minimize bio-impact on the rear suspension.

With the DW-Link design controlling unwanted squat, a lightly damped shock can respond with extreme sensitivity to the demands of the trail. In this case, FOX Racing Shox's new Float CTD with Kashima provides the motion control. The Mach 5.7 Carbon shares the same frame geometry as its aluminum brethren, and its 67.6-degree head angle makes it incredibly stable at speed. Dropping into steep rocky chutes is a simple point-and-shoot affair, and the lighter frame weight becomes apparent when it's time to flick it into a turn.

The Pivot Mach 5.7 Carbon Mountain Bike Frame is available in Carbon Pink, Carbon Green, Carbon Red, and Carbon Blue. It comes in five sizes from X-Small to X-Large. It uses a High Direct mount for the front derailleur, and you'll need a 30.9mm seatpost. It comes with guides for a remote-controlled dropper post. The tapered head tube requires a semi integrated (zero stack) tapered headset with 44mm top and 56mm lower cup diameters. Pivot recommends a 140-150mm fork. The Mach 5.7 Carbon has a post-type disc brake mount and uses a 12x 42mm thru-axle (included) for the rear wheel.
