The original 429 Carbon was lauded for its combination of climbing ability, descending prowess, and eagerness to be driven hard. On the trail, it was one of the stiffest, most agile bikes we could find in the short-travel 29er crowd. The 2016 Pivot Mach 429SL Carbon Mountain Bike Frame builds on the 429's legendary reputation for stiff aggression while weighing in a claimed half-pound lighter to silence any complaints from gram-conscious riders.
Pivot achieved this weight reduction with its proprietary hollow-core, internal-mandrel technology, the same process that was employed for the original 429 Carbon. Pivot scrutinized its 429 layup, refining both the structure and the composite materials used. As a result of those efforts, the podium-hungry Mach 429SL Carbon is one of the lightest full-suspension bikes Pivot has ever made, and those weight savings come without any corresponding sacrifices to stiffness or ride quality. The 429SL tracks through rough terrain, hard corners, and off-camber landings with unwavering accuracy.
The Mach 429SL utilizes the proven DW-link suspension design, which yields 100mm of smooth travel while counteracting speed-robbing pedaling forces. This translates to race-worthy acceleration and consistent contact with the trail even while pumping out of the saddle across loose dirt or successive bumps. Pivot worked closely with FOX on the Float Kashima Factory shock tune, so the 429SL's suspension and shock combine to provide travel that’s responsive, predictable, and uses every available millimeter. As with prior iterations of the Mach 429, you’ll feel like you’re riding a bike with more travel.
As the proverbial icing on the XC cake, the Pivot Mach 429SL Carbon is one of the first production frames to come equipped for Shimano Di2. There’s a battery port ingeniously tucked into the frame, accessible via a securely covered hole in the downtube. With the recent release of XTR Di2 and rumors of more off-road electronic shifting options on the way, Pivot's futureproof forward thinking makes the 429SL an ideal choice for those of us looking for the best shifting experience without the headaches of trying to adapt a non-Di2-compatible frame.
