All day fast, all season strong.

Carbon fiber, DW-Link, Shimano drivetrain—it reads like a wish list of all the features your dream bike should have. Not surprising, since the Pivot Mach 429 Carbon XT XTR PRO complete mountain bike easily qualifies as a dream ride. At its heart is the award-winning Mach 429 Carbon frame, which has won over riders with its smooth DW-Link suspension and responsive carbon fiber frame. Suspension duties are handled by Factory series FOX units, which employ updated dampers and the distinctive Kashima coating for a supple ride that exceeds what you've come to expect out of a 100mm-travel bike. The build kit is a carefully selected Shimano blend, consisting primarily of the workhorse XT groupset, and it rolls on DT Swiss's Spline 350 wheelset. The end product is an incredibly capable machine that's just as comfortable racing XC as it is cranking out aggressive laps on technical trails.

The components certainly make a difference, but the defining characteristic of a great bike will always be the frame. Accordingly, Pivot took its time when developing the Mach 429 to ensure that it was as durable, as responsive, and as smooth as possible. Taking lessons from the development of the venerable Mach 5.7 Carbon, the Mach 429 Carbon was able to both shed weight and improve stiffness over its aluminum counterpart. Naturally, the short aluminum links connecting the rear triangle contribute greatly to the stiffness, as do the 142x12mm through axle and massive tapered head tube. The BB92 bottom bracket shell allows for the widest possible shell, both saving weight and improving stiffness over a standard 73mm threaded shell. And while the 5.8 average pound frame weight doesn't make the 429 carbon the lightest in its class, details like custom molded stay guards and an impact resistant downtube guard point to the optimal balance of efficiency and durability that this frame achieves.

Its DW-Link suspension platform was designed, and then refined, by suspension super-guru Dave Weagle. While it's perfectly reasonable to simply trust the string of World Cup wins and podium appearances by Weagle's suspension designs, it's the first ride that will truly drive home the advantage that the DW-Link provides. Far from being exclusively advantageous to the world's fastest racers, the trail-tuned, 29er-optimized version found on the Mach 429 smooths rough sections and provides tenacious climbing grip that both seasoned riders and novices alike will appreciate immediately. These characteristics are a product of hundreds of hours of fine-tuning wheel path and leverage curves to neutralize the effect of your body's movement, making the 429 as efficient while climbing as it is descending. The low leverage ratio provided by this dual link suspension design enables lower spring rates and lighter damping, for an incredibly supple ride that doesn't sacrifice the snappy, inspiring feel when you get on the pedals.

The build kit starts with Shimano brakes and drivetrain. The XT brakes provide fantastic stopping power with minimal effort. The drivetrain consists of XT shifters, cassette, front derailleur and double chainring crankset, mated to an XTR rear derailleur. The combination of stiff crank arms and optimized tooth profiles on the chainring and cassette results in direct application of power, and lightning fast shifts. Suspension duties are handled by Factory series FOX units, specifically a 32 FLOAT CTD fork and FLOAT CTD rear shock. In addition to updated dampers which provide an improved range of setups, you'll find the drool-worthy Kashima treatment, which improves hardness on sliding surfaces, for a plush ride. The CTD adjustment scheme takes the guesswork out of achieving an ideal suspension setup, especially when you're making adjustments on the fly. The cockpit is comprised of an FSA stem and seatpost, mated to Pivot's own carbon fiber handlebar. It rolls on a DT Swiss Spline wheelset, with DT's straight pull 350 hubs and legendary Star ratchet mechanism, and One XR rims. They're wrapped in Kenda's fast rolling, grippy Slant 6 tires. The combination results in a bike that begs for all day rides on the most varied terrain you can find.

The Pivot Mach 429 Carbon XT/XTR PRO complete mountain bike is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large, and in the colors Green, Matte Black/red, and Matte Black/blue.
