Description

Trail manners and rolling stock.

Paired with FOX suspension, DT Swiss rolling stock, and SRAM X01, it's going to be hard to improve on this Pivot Mach 429 Carbon Complete Mountain Bike. As it sits, this Mach 429 Carbon is versatile enough to compete in expert-class crosscountry events, while still being ready for aggressive, all-day backcountry adventures.

But this isn't solely due to the aforementioned components. Instead, much of those traits come from a revised DW-Link design, a fresh geometry, and a new carbon chassis that builds on the expertise gained from the groundbreaking Mach 5.7 Carbon. This fresh chassis' sweeping curves and smooth tube junctures are the result of years of development, and a classic case of form following function.

Pivot's exclusive hollow box, high-compression, internal molding technology allows a greater compaction of the fibers and resin and smoother internal walls that produce a lighter, stronger, and highly optimized frame design. The end result is a focus on the revised DW-Link design for unparalleled chassis strength and stiffness. However, the most obvious change to this iteration of the DW-Link is found at the upper-link.

It's mounted lower, and it's packaged more compactly in order to reduce flex in the link, and to lessen play from dimensional tolerances. But the revised link plays a much greater role in the whole 29er picture. The tighter packed upper-link permits a smaller, stiffer rear triangle and lower shock mounting. This effectively translates into chainstays that are close to a centimeter shorter and a stand over height that grants an inch-and-a-half more breathing room.

Because of these two changes alone, you'll experience quicker handling and livelier trail manners. Adding to these positive characteristics is a millimeter shorter bottom bracket height, and a slightly slacker seat tube angle. On the trail, the Mach 429 Carbon glides over rocks, roots, and ruts, yet it still remains firm while hammering out of the saddle. Why? Well, because the DW-Link suspension design mitigates the natural squat tendencies of full-suspension bikes.

With the DW-Link controlling unwanted squat, the lightly damped FOX FLOAT CTD Kashima shock is able to respond with ultra-sensitivity to the demands of the trail. As a result, the Mach 429 Carbon will soak up big, square-edged hits and minute trail chatter alike. There are a few other details that emphasize the efforts towards optimizing the Mach 429 Carbon.

One of the easiest to see is the wide, BB92 PressFit bottom bracket that allows Pivot to connect a massive down tube, while also increasing the width of the lower-link for an enhanced resistance to torsional flex. It's here that you'll find a GXP crank with a 30t ring that spins an 11-speed, 10-42t cassette that's mounted to DT Swiss 350 XR XD Tubeless wheels

The wheels are wrapped in fast-rolling Kenda Slant Six rubber, and to scrub speed, X0 trail brakes provide excellent power and modulation. Completing the X01 kit is a X01 11-speed Type 2 rear derailleur, which is controlled by an X01 shifter that's mounted to a Phoenix carbon riser bar. FSA's SL-K stem fills the void between the bar and a 120mm-travel FOX 32 FIT CTD fork with Kashima. Finally, you'll find a WTB Volt Race saddle perched upon a FSA SL-K Carbon seatpost.

The Pivot Mach 429 Carbon X01 Complete Mountain Bike is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and in the colors Green, Matte Black/Red, Matte Black/blue.

Very Pleased

I recently purchased this bike after debating between several. One of the best decisions Ive ever made! It has everything riders loved about the alloy frame but in a lighter, stiffer and more agile version. For only having 100mm of travel the bike actually handles gnarly terrain extremely well, due largely to the slightly slacker head angle. With the lower bottom bracket and shorter chain stays this bike descends extremely fast and is very acrobatic when picking lines.Another amazing component to this bike is the DW-Link suspension. Its a bit stiffer than other suspension offerings by other brands but the suspension only works when you need it to giving it a hardtail like feel when climbing- anti squat too. The icing on the cake is the X01- 1x11 drivetrain which is an awesome compliment to this frame-light weight, very quiet and say good bye to throwing chains! All in all this is a great all around bike. It can certainly be very effective as a race bike yet comfortable enough for long, epic rides with your buddies on the weekend. Its definitely my choice for this season and if you have the means I highly recommend picking one up.

Pivot for the win

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Pivot 429c is absolutely my favorite bike Ive ever thrown a leg over. It's not for everyone as this bike likes to be ridden fast, but if you want a bike that happy anywhere on the mountain, this is it. I've owned everything from the Jet 9, Tallboy, Tallboy LT, and Superfly 100 and nothing descents like a 429 while still climbing like a goat. It's a smidge heavier than the Jet 9 or the tallboy, but stiffness and geometry make up for its slightly heavier build.

I raced BC Bike Race this summer had good results in XC and great results in the Enduro. After 7 days of the hardest trails on the planet, we couldnt help but head up the lifts for 2 days of park runs. Okay, maybe it wasnt made for park, but it still kept up with the big kids.

Bottom line: This bike like to ride hard and fast. If youre a casual rider with averages less than 10mph, the Tallboy might be your bike. If you want a rigid, lightweight racer, check out the Jet 9. If you want the most fun you can possibly throw a leg over, this is your bike.

***Setup Note: Pivot recommends 30% sag. This gives you a very playful ride but a bit sluggish in quick accelerations and steep climbs. I prefer to run mine between 20-25% and still use all 100mm of travel. It rides like a whole new bike.

This is a factory build from Pivot but Ive put together many custom builds on this bike and Id love to help with either route you choose. Please reach out to me if I can provide our best pricing quote, help with an order, or answer any other questions. My number here is 801-736-6396 x 5630 or email adewitt@competitivecyclist.com
