Description

Hit 'em with it.

By now, you've seen, heard, and dreamed about Pivot's Mach 429 Carbon. And with DW-Link suspension and renowned carbon fiber construction, why wouldn't you? Well, if you've been waiting for a more cost effective option, the Pivot Mach 429 Carbon SLX Complete Mountain Bike is the answer that you've been waiting for. The value packed Shimano build kit provides the supreme quality that you'd expect, without sacrificing an ounce of ride quality. The trails won't know what hit 'em.

The components certainly make a difference, but the defining characteristic of a great bike will always be the frame. Accordingly, Pivot took its time when developing the Mach 429 to ensure that it was as durable, as responsive, and as smooth as possible. Taking lessons from the development of the venerable Mach 5.7 Carbon, the Mach 429 Carbon was able to both shed weight and improve stiffness over its aluminum counterpart. Naturally, the short aluminum links connecting the rear triangle contribute greatly to the stiffness, as do the 142x12mm through axle and massive tapered head tube. The BB92 bottom bracket shell allows for the widest possible shell, both saving weight and improving stiffness over a standard 73mm threaded shell. And while the 5.8 average pound frame weight doesn't make the 429 carbon the lightest in its class, details like custom molded stay guards and an impact resistant down tube guard point to the optimal balance of efficiency and durability that this frame achieves.

Its DW-Link suspension platform was designed, and then refined, by suspension super-guru Dave Weagle. While it's perfectly reasonable to simply trust the string of World Cup wins and podium appearances by Weagle's suspension designs, it's the first ride that will truly drive home the advantage that the DW-Link provides. Far from being exclusively advantageous to the world's fastest racers, the trail-tuned, 29er-optimized version found on the Mach 429 smooths rough sections and provides tenacious climbing grip that both seasoned riders and novices alike will appreciate immediately. These characteristics are a product of hundreds of hours of fine-tuning wheel path and leverage curves to neutralize the effect of your body's movement, making the 429 as efficient while climbing as it is descending. The low leverage ratio provided by this dual link suspension design enables lower spring rates and lighter damping, for an incredibly supple ride that doesn't sacrifice the snappy, inspiring feel when you get on the pedals.

The build kit starts with Shimano brakes and drivetrain. The SLX brakes have quickly become a favorite for their incredible stopping power and reliability. The drivetrain consists of SLX shifters, an 11-36t HG-62 cassette, a SLX direct-mount front derailleur, a 24/38t double chainring M625 crankset, and a XT Shadow Plus rear derailleur. The combination of stiff crank arms and optimized tooth profiles on the chainring and cassette results in direct application of power and lightning fast shifts. Suspension duties are handled by Evolution Series FOX units, with a 32 FLOAT CTD fork and FLOAT CTD rear shock. And while they forgo the Kashima coating of the Factory Series components, you're still looking at a stiff, lightweight chassis that eats rough trails for breakfast. The CTD adjustment scheme takes the guesswork out of achieving an ideal suspension setup, especially when you're making adjustments on the fly. The cockpit is comprised of a FSA OS150 stem, an alloy XC255 seatpost, and a Comet alloy handlebar. The 429 rolls on a DT Swiss X1900 wheelset that's wrapped in Kenda's fast rolling, grippy Slant 6 2.2-inch tires.

The Pivot Mach 429 Carbon SLX Complete Mountain Bike is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and in the colors Green, Matte Black/red, and Matte Black/blue.

Pivot for the WIN

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Pivot 429c is absolutely my favorite bike I’ve ever thrown a leg over. It’s not for everyone as this bike likes to be ridden fast, but if you want a bike that happy anywhere on the mountain, this is it. I’ve owned everything from the Jet 9, Tallboy, Tallboy LT, and Superfly 100 and nothing descents like a 429 while still climbing like a goat. It’s a smidge heavier than the Jet 9 or the tallboy, but stiffness and geometry make up for its slightly heavier build.

I raced BC Bike Race this summer had good results in XC and great results in the Enduro. After 7 days of the hardest trails on the planet, we couldn’t help but head up the lifts for 2 days of park runs. Okay, maybe it wasn’t made for park, but it still kept up with the big kids.

Bottom line: This bike like to ride hard and fast. If you’re a casual rider with averages less than 10mph, the Tallboy might be your bike. If you want a rigid, lightweight racer, check out the Jet 9. If you want the most fun you can possibly throw a leg over, this is your bike.

***Setup Note: Pivot recommends 30% sag. This gives you a very playful ride but a bit sluggish in quick accelerations and steep climbs. I prefer to run mine between 20-25% and still use all 100mm of travel. It rides like a whole new bike.

This is a factory build from Pivot but I’ve put together many custom builds on this bike and I’d love to help with either route you choose. Please reach out to me if I can provide our best pricing quote, help with an order, or answer any other questions. My number here is 801-736-6396 x 5630 or email adewitt@competitivecyclist.com
