The reason we can't start this by telling you that the Pivot Mach 4 Carbon XX1 Complete Mountain Bike is the ultimate "one" bike is because we've used that title on a small number of other machines already. We feel a bit silly, but then again, truly, we're not just spinning words — there are a few bikes we sell that really are true do-it-all machines for most riders. The all-new Mach 4 is the latest entry into this category, particularly for XC-oriented riders who focus on speed but still want to be able to hit some hairier stuff without having to hop off their "other" bike.
The original all-aluminum Mach 4 was a 26-inch-wheeled XC beast that was light and fast, yet burly enough to take some abuse. The new, full-carbon Mach 4 takes those same attributes and kicks them up a notch or four. Using different high-modulus carbons and its proprietary hollow core internal molding technology, Pivot was able to achieve measurably improved stats for the carbon Mach 4 — greater stiffness, greater torsional strength, lower weight, etc. — than the alloy version, a feat all the more impressive considering that the new Mach 4 is designed to accommodate 27.5-inch wheels. The "mid-size" wheels also strike the perfect balance for a "one" bike, making the Mach 4 smoother rolling than 26ers, but without the additional weight or tricky handling associated with big-wheeled 29ers. The 27.5" wheels are also more stout that 29ers, so while you give up a little bit of the 29ers' ability to maintain momentum over technical terrain at speed, you gain a tougher wheel overall.
Speaking of tough, don't be fooled by the numbers you're scoping over there. Yes, the geometry of the Mach 4 leans more toward XC efficiency than Trail aggro-ness, but it's neutral enough that either style of riding will be comfortable, particularly with a 120mm fork up front. And at this point you're likely hearing our trail-ready geo argument but scoffing at the 115mm of travel out back. Don't. Pivot's main brain Chris Cocalis and DW-link's Dave Weagle teamed up for a set of exhaustive sessions to dial in the Mach 4's suspension, resulting in a progressive motion that feels virtually bottomless when you hit the big stuff.
You can tune the bike's suspension character as you see fit, too, with the Kashima-coated FLOAT CTD shock that FOX made in conjunction with Cocalis and Weagle specifically for the Mach 4. A special tab on the shock has two lines — one labeled XC, one labeled Trail — that illustrate the proper sag points to aim for when dialing in your Mach 4. Choose the point on the spectrum that best fits your riding, or add or remove air from the shock to ready it for the upcoming ride. It's up to you. The chassis can handle it, and it can also handle electronic drivetrain cabling, dropper posts, or whatever else the industry wants to throw at it, thanks to the "future-proofing" that Pivot integrated into the Mach 4's design.
