Pivot Les 29 Carbon XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2014 $0.00
Strength all too often means a harsh ride, while lightness equals a flex'y flyer. In the case of Pivot's Les Carbon, dressed here in a mid-level XT Complete Mountain Bike kit, extensive research, design, and exclusive technology resulted in a chassis that provides an experience that's both smooth and incredibly responsive.
Oh, and it weighs in under 2.5lbs. That's light, and it wouldn't be possible without Pivot's hollow-box, high-compression internal molding technology — the same process that's used to create the LES' signature shape. This allows for greater compaction and smoother internal walls in order to produce a lighter, stronger, and highly optimized frame. The top tube and seatstays are flattened compared to the large down tube, creating a leaf-spring-like-motion to dampen the LES' ride. This shape, however, is wider along the Z-axis, so it won't flex side-to-side while sprinting.
Adding to the ride quality are stout chainstays that have been mated to a 92mm PressFit bottom bracket. It's here that you'll find Shimano's XT crankset with 24/38t rings spinning an 11-36t XT cassette. These ratio's perfectly match the larger diameter wheels while optimizing clearance for log crossings. On the opposite end of the chainstays, you'll find Pivot's Swinger adjustable dropout system with a 12x142mm thru-axle tying everything together.
The Swinger dropout allows you to lengthen the Les' short, 27.1-inch chainstays in order to adjust handling characteristics. Or, if you've the gumption, to drop the gears for a single speed setup. At the front end of the Les, a tapered head tube is graced with FOX's 32 FLOAT 29 FIT CTD Trail Adjust with Kashima. This gives the Les a 69.5 degree head tube — a welcomed break from the steep, traditional angles of race bikes.

Do it all bike
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I had been wanting to buy a new mtb for the better part of 5 years. I've got to say after a year of use this bike has more than fulfilled my expectations. I raced this bike in Leadville and while I didn't set any records I definitely appreciated every positive aspect of this bike. Always felt like on a hardtail that I would be better off on a full suspension in rocky terrain but this thing rocks! With this bike you just point your line and let it go. It may not be the fastest cross-country machine but it's pretty light and climbs like a goat. I've never felt in such control or confident about my riding than on this bike. I found myself riding terrain I never would have attempted on my Felt RXC. In one year the only issue I've had is that the brakes got contaminated a few months back and the pads need to be replaced. If you're looking for a platform to do whatever you want to do then this is the bike. I haven't done it yet but I've been thinking of buying the single speed kit and throwing on a Whiskey carbon fork.
If you can afford the price tag this is a great bike. If you do, think about getting some of those clear protector stickers to protect the frame from cable wear on the head tube. Great job Pivot!
