Pivot Les 27.5 Carbon XT Complete Mountain Bike $4,299.00
The new face of XC.
The 29er fans among us will be loathe to admit it, but 27.5-inch wheels have proven that they're not just a fad. In fact, already with a string of elite level XC victories this year, there's a strong case to be made that the mid-sized wheels are the fastest option on dirt. So if you're considering smaller wheels for both their reduced weight and improved handling, the Pivot LES 27.5 Carbon XT Complete Mountain Bike makes the decision a little easier. Using the accumulated knowledge from Pivot's extensive composites program, the LES boasts a smooth ride and responsive handling that'll put smiles on the faces of pro racers and enthusiasts alike.
And while Pivot may be best known for its full-suspension bikes, don't think for a second that the knowhow from its extensive suspension lineup doesn't translate into top tier hardtail frames as well. Stiffness in the right places is key, as seen in the 12x142mm thru-axle and massive tapered head tube. The BB92 bottom bracket shell allows for the widest possible shell, both saving weight and improving stiffness over a standard 73mm threaded shell. Details like custom molded stay guards and an impact resistant down tube guard clearly illustrate that Pivot wasn't willing to cut corners on the way to a pro-level race bike.
Pivot's extensive experience working in carbon fiber is on full display with the LES. The most significant example of this is the hardest to see, namely the fully compacted carbon fiber that's used in the frame. By optimizing the compaction, Pivot removes any unnecessary epoxy, which minimizes weight and optimizes strength. The tube forming is of particular importance, because it dictates the ride quality of the frame. Accordingly, areas like the chainstays and down tube, where stiffness is paramount, have been built as large as possible in order to fight deflection. However, the seatstays have been flattened and feature a slight bow, which allows them to bend under load, smoothing out the ride. Basically, Pivot made sure to sweat the small stuff so that your bike rides beautifully over rough terrain, while remaining stiff when you get on the pedals.
The build kit starts with Shimano brakes and drivetrain. The Shimano XT brakes were an obvious choice, as they combine fantastic stopping power with a relatively light overall weight. The drivetrain consists of XT shifters, a HG81 11-36t cassette, a 24/38t XT crankset, a XT direct-mount front derailleur, and a XT Shadow Plus rear derailleur. Suspension duties are handled by a 100mm FOX 32 FIT CTD Kashima fork. The Kashima coating reduces drag, so the sealed FIT damper is able to do the best possible job of smoothing out rough trails. The CTD adjustment scheme takes the guesswork out of achieving an ideal suspension setup, especially when you're making adjustments on the fly. The cockpit is comprised of an FSA Afterburner stem, handlebar, and seatpost, while the rest of it is rounded out by a Pivot WTB Volt Race saddle and Pivot lock-on grips. Lastly, the LES rolls on a DT Swiss 275 Spline M1700 tubeless-ready wheelset that's been wrapped in Kenda Karma 2.0 tires.
The Pivot LES 27.5 Carbon XT Complete Mountain Bike is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and in the colors Green, Matte Black/red/white, and Matte Black/blue.

sweet race bike
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I had a chance to ride this bike at Outerbike this year. The LES 27.5 was a really fast, stiff hard tail that would make an awesome race bike.I found it to be very agile and responsive and felt I could really lay down power without sacrificing stability. The 27.5 tire size was nice too as it did provide a little suspension for the rocky areas while being able to carve out lines off the trail like a 26''r. Fun for sure!
