Built to send, and now, climb.

It was only natural for Pivot's versatile Firebird to make the 27.5-inch leap, as its long legs and slack geometry could only benefit from better traction and approach angles. And with 167mm of DW-Link smoothness, Shimano XT components, and mid-sized wheels, this Pivot is ready for any and all conditions.

Of course, this aluminum chassis is able to hold its own when pointed down, but what's important to note is how well it handles the ride up. This is made possible, by combining DW's anti-squat characteristics with a FOX FLOAT CTD shock with Kashima. What you get is a bike that's fun to ride in any terrain, mainly because the suspension is able to do what it's supposed to do — let the wheel follow the ground.

DW-Link rear suspension actively works to counteract the effects on the suspension as you pedal or shift your weight around on the bike. And with the Links controlling unwanted suspension squat, the lightly damped shock is able to respond to trail surfaces with ultra-sensitivity.

However, a sorted suspension design is worthless without a solid chassis. For that reason, Pivot expertly crafts both the front and rear triangles out of hydroformed 6000 series aluminum. This provides a stiff platform for the suspension to do its work. 3D hollow forged aluminum aligns grain structure and strengthens the material at select points of the frame. This makes the Firebird frame strong enough to endure serious downhills, yet it's light enough to be considered an all-out trail machine.

The Firebird relies on sealed cartridge bearings, and the forged, CNC-machined aluminum lower-link contains eight of them — two at each corner. This increases the durability, stretches service life, and keeps suspension friction at a minimum. The upper-link is made of carbon fiber for strength and light weight, and since it sees less stress than its lower counterpart, Pivot relies on four bearings to do the job here.

With a 160mm-travel FOX 34 FLOAT FIT CTD fork hanging on the front of this Firebird, the head angle settles in at 66 degrees to ensure that it's stable without being too slow on climbs. Adding to this bike's versatility is a 1.5in head tube with Pivot's angled headset. So, you're able to fine tune the head angle +/- one degree. To utilize the 27.5-inch rubber at its maximum, this Firebird rides on Stan's NoTubes Flow EX wheels with a Kenda Nevegal up front and a Honey Badger out back.

As mentioned earlier, this build consists of Shimano's XT group, which includes a 24/32t crankset, an 11-36t cassette, XT shifters, and XT derailleurs. XT brakes with 180mm rotors are also on deck in order to slow this monster truck down. And because this bike is destined for the rough stuff, you'll find an MRP LRP chainguide to keep the chain in check. As for cockpit components, a 740mm wide Phoenix carbon riser, FSA Gap stem, and KS Lev dropper reflect this bikes big-mountain capabilities.

The Pivot Firebird 27.5 XT Complete Mountain Bike is available in the sizes Small, Medium, and Large and in the colors Black, White/red, and White/green.

32mm fork on a gravity-slanted AM Bike?

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

What a JOKE!

Never mind its CLAIMED weight is 33lbs!

It's designed to hit the gravity side of the mountain, and they give you spaghetti for forks.

I've ridden two different Firebirds, and NEITHER of 'em had a freaking 32mm fork on it.

Does this mean we can thank Competitive Cyclist for sliding in the wet-noodle in an effort to boost their margin on this thing?

Agreed. I rode DH laps at Interbike last year on this same model but with a 34 Fox fork and it slayed.

For whatever reason, a 32mm fork on a 6.5" travel bike is not fair to such a great frameset and suspension design.

Great ride quality

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently rode this bike in Moab,Ut at Outerbike. The Firebird is a fun bike and I really enjoyed riding it over the gnarly sections of Deadmans trail. In fact, I was so impressed with the ride quality of the bike I opted for another loop because I couldn't believe the superb ride quality it was putting out for me.The 27.5 wheel size worked well in this environment. The pedaling and climbing efficiency of this bike was amazing. Pivot has done a great job with this bike and it is highly recommended.

Great ride quality
