It was only natural for Pivot's versatile Firebird to make the 27.5-inch leap, as its long legs and slack geometry could only benefit from better traction and approach angles. And with 167mm of DW-Link smoothness, Shimano XT components, and mid-sized wheels, this Pivot is ready for any and all conditions.
Of course, this aluminum chassis is able to hold its own when pointed down, but what's important to note is how well it handles the ride up. This is made possible, by combining DW's anti-squat characteristics with a FOX FLOAT CTD shock with Kashima. What you get is a bike that's fun to ride in any terrain, mainly because the suspension is able to do what it's supposed to do — let the wheel follow the ground.
DW-Link rear suspension actively works to counteract the effects on the suspension as you pedal or shift your weight around on the bike. And with the Links controlling unwanted suspension squat, the lightly damped shock is able to respond to trail surfaces with ultra-sensitivity.
However, a sorted suspension design is worthless without a solid chassis. For that reason, Pivot expertly crafts both the front and rear triangles out of hydroformed 6000 series aluminum. This provides a stiff platform for the suspension to do its work. 3D hollow forged aluminum aligns grain structure and strengthens the material at select points of the frame. This makes the Firebird frame strong enough to endure serious downhills, yet it's light enough to be considered an all-out trail machine.
The Firebird relies on sealed cartridge bearings, and the forged, CNC-machined aluminum lower-link contains eight of them — two at each corner. This increases the durability, stretches service life, and keeps suspension friction at a minimum. The upper-link is made of carbon fiber for strength and light weight, and since it sees less stress than its lower counterpart, Pivot relies on four bearings to do the job here.
With a 160mm-travel FOX 34 FLOAT FIT CTD fork hanging on the front of this Firebird, the head angle settles in at 66 degrees to ensure that it's stable without being too slow on climbs. Adding to this bike's versatility is a 1.5in head tube with Pivot's angled headset. So, you're able to fine tune the head angle +/- one degree. To utilize the 27.5-inch rubber at its maximum, this Firebird rides on Stan's NoTubes Flow EX wheels with a Kenda Nevegal up front and a Honey Badger out back.
As mentioned earlier, this build consists of Shimano's XT group, which includes a 24/32t crankset, an 11-36t cassette, XT shifters, and XT derailleurs. XT brakes with 180mm rotors are also on deck in order to slow this monster truck down. And because this bike is destined for the rough stuff, you'll find an MRP LRP chainguide to keep the chain in check. As for cockpit components, a 740mm wide Phoenix carbon riser, FSA Gap stem, and KS Lev dropper reflect this bikes big-mountain capabilities.
