Some things go well together, like 167mm of DW-Link smoothness, Shimano SLX components, and mid-sized wheels. And that's exactly what you'll find on Pivot's hard-charging Firebird 27.5 SLX Complete mountain bike.
Reliable, competent, and lively are good descriptors for this bike, and that wouldn't be possible without Pivot's prowess in aluminum engineering. Pivot expertly crafts both the front and rear triangles out of hydroformed 6000 series aluminum to provide a stiff platform for the suspension to do its work. 3D hollow forged aluminum aligns grain structure and strengthens the material at select points of the frame. This makes the Firebird frame strong enough to endure serious downhills, yet it's light enough to be considered an all-out trail machine.
Of course, this aluminum chassis can hold its own when pointed down, but what's important to note is how well it can handle the ride up. This is made possible by combining DW's anti-squat characteristics with a FOX FLOAT CTD shock with Kashima. What you get is a bike that's fun to ride in any terrain because the suspension can do what it's supposed to do -- let the wheel follow the ground.
To refresh on the DW-Link merits, the rear suspension actively works to counteract effects on the suspension as you pedal or shift your weight around on the bike through a variety of trail conditions. With the Link controlling unwanted suspension squat, the lightly damped shock can respond to the trail surface with ultra-sensitivity. This affords the wheels the freedom to track surfaces of the trail, and to absorb low- or high-speed bumps without blowing through travel.
The Firebird 27.5 relies on sealed cartridge bearings, and the forged, CNC machined aluminum lower link contains eight of them -- two at each corner. This increases durability, stretches service life, and keeps suspension friction at a minimum. The upper link is made of carbon fiber for strength and light weight, and since it sees less stress than its lower counterpart, Pivot relies on four bearings here to do the job.
With a 150mm-travel FOX 34 FLOAT 27.5 CTD Evolution hanging on the front of this Firebird, the head angle settles in at 66 degrees to ensure stability without slowness on climbs. Adding to this bike's versatility is a 1.5in headtube with Pivot's angled head set so you can fine tune the head angle +/- one degree. To maximize the 27.5 rubber, this Firebird rides on DT Swiss Spline E1900 wheels with a Kenda Nevegal up front and Honey Badger out back.
As mentioned earlier, this build consists of Shimano's SLX group, which includes a 11-36T cassette, shifters, and derailleurs. Pivot opted for an FSA Gap Crankset with 26/36T rings and an MRP LRP chainguide to hold everything together. Deore brakes with 180mm rotors are also on deck to slow this monster truck down.
As for cockpit components, a 740mm wide FSA Gravity Light OS handlebar, FSA Gap stem, and Gravity Light seatpost with WTB Vigo Sport saddle keep things light and strong. The Pivot Firebird 27.5 Complete Mountain Bike comes in Black, White/Red, White/Green, and White/Blue, with sizes ranging from Small to Large.
