Adding efficiency to your routine.

Electronic powerhouse Pioneer has spent the last two years working directly with the Belkin professional team, testing and refining its latest powermeter design. The result is a revamped unit mated to Shimano's Dura-Ace 9000 Powermeter Crankset, giving you Pioneer's fully integrated, ultra-sleek, and exceptionally accurate dual-leg strain gauges and transmitter system.

The system measures pedaling force, direction, and overall efficiency via its dual strain gauges that have been bonded to the left and right crankarms. The transmitter itself is bolted directly to Shimano's spider using the original crankset bolts, maintaining an unobtrusive profile that smoothly blends into the spider's arms. These sensor units on the inside of each crank arm are then able to capture 12 points of rotation per leg, at 30-degree intervals. The sensors measure minute changes in the shape of the crank caused when force is applied while pedaling. From this, force is calculated in both the direction of rotation and the radial direction. The combination of these two force components tells us the direction in which the total force is being applied, which is shown using the system's force vectors. Also, a magnet ring that attaches to the bottom bracket measures the position of the crank, allowing precise display of the force vectors at every 30-degree interval throughout rotation.

The force vectors for one full rotation are then wirelessly transmitted to your ANT+ head unit, either third party or Pioneer's SGX-CA900 and 500 models, displayed as pedaling efficiency. The idea is to target these efficiencies for improvement in training and racing. When pedaling efficiency is high, most of the rider's power is being used to rotate the pedals. So, the force measured in the direction of rotation at each of the 12 points is combined to give the total power output for that rotation. This system is more immune to the inaccuracies found in other powermeters that don't gather information at 12 force vectors.

This data is then stored in long file form that can be accessed and analyzed after the ride. You're able to upload your log data to Pioneer's Cyclo-Sphere website, which lets you analyze left and right side pedaling efficiency, power, and force vectors, among many other types of data displayed in easy-to-understand graphs and numerical displays.

For the crankset that the system is paired with, the Shimano FC-9000 features a shift to a new four-arm spider design. This occured for many reasons, but most notably, it's because the four-arm spider matches rigidity with previous 7900, while shaving around 52 grams. However, 9000 has more than meets the eye. Like 7900, you'll find the continuation of Shimano's Hollowtech II construction. Over the past few iterations of Dura-Ace, this manufacturing methodology has played an integral role in attaining weight reduction without sacrificing Dura-Ace's superior stiffness.

The Pioneer Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 Powermeter Crankset is available in sizes 165 to 175mm, with the following chainring configurations: 50/34t, 52/36t, and 53/39t. The powermeter operates wirelessly with ANT+, and it's being offered as a standalone item. However, it is compatible with Pioneer's SGX-CA900 and 500 computers, or any other ANT+ compatible device.
