Celebrate 'cross in style.

Mid-September through October may just be the finest time of the year for cycling. You get to enjoy long mornings with coffee and a leisurely breakfast without worrying about beating the summer heatwave, you get to indulge your inner fashionista with long sleeve kits and stylish cool-weather accessories, you get to enjoy the changing seasons, and — perhaps most importantly for all of us whose office computer wallpapers are pictures of Compton or Nys year-round — cyclocross is starting up. As you make the transition from road or singletrack to the hybrid course, make sure you're ready for whatever the season has on offer with Pinarello's FCX Frameset. Pinarello's stated aim with the FCX is to give cyclocrossers a machine that mimics the ride of a Pinarello road frame with a few adaptations for 'cross-specific use.

The FCX's construction starts with 30HM12K carbon, a modulus that offers enough responsiveness for out-of-the-saddle hammering but won't hammer you back when you're rumbling over courses that are singletrack in all but name. Pinarello's engineers use their SOE System to perfect the layup in a virtual lab, performing the initial stages of engineering using technical software. This means that when they start producing material framesets, they've already worked through the initial prototype stages. All of this pre-feedback equates to a more efficient and durable frameset. The virtual design space also gives the engineers freedom to explore the effectiveness of unlimited tube shapes and angles. Pinarello doesn't limit itself to conventional standards, which goes some way toward explaining their bikes' striking frameset shapes and inimitable ride quality.

In line with Pinarello's effort to recreate the road experience for the 'cross course, the FCX's geometry is nearly identical to its roadie siblings. Compared to Pinarello's Dogma F8 and the cobblestone-inspired ROKH, the FCX's fork rake and seatstay length are tweaked to give it a slightly longer wheelbase, which gives you more tire clearance and maximizes your stability for riding on non-paved courses without making the bike too long and unwieldy for a tight, technical circuit. Compared to other flagship 'cross frames, such as Niner's BSB, the FCX has a slightly longer top tube (~15 millimeters on a size 56) and a higher stack, which make for a more upright position. Most significantly, the FCX's lower head tube angle means it handles much better at speed than a frame like the BSB with a larger angle and less rake, which you'll appreciate on courses with long runs over difficult terrain. It also makes for a more comfortable overall ride, whether you're bunny-hopping obstacles or out for a spin on the road.

The FCX's asymmetric frameset, a benefit of SOE engineering, is designed to buttress the parts of the frameset that bear the effort of pedaling under load. The drivetrain is on one side, so it makes sense that the frame itself should accommodate the offset nature of the bike's engine — namely, you turning the cranks and rotating the chain. The Integral System Onda tapered head tube equates to better tracking through terrain for even more stability, and internal cable routing keeps race grime from gumming up your drivetrain. On top of all this, the FCX's incorporation of the Think2 System means this frameset isn't just a single-season treat, but you can trick it out with upgrades for years to come. Since it accommodates mechanical and electronic groupsets, the bike is future ready.

We mentioned indulging your inner fashionista earlier. This may not be for everyone, but if you do appreciate the aesthetic elements of cycling gear, then you'd be hard-pressed to find a sexier 'cross frameset than the FCX. The barbed graphics along the top tube and inner fork suggest predatory stripes or claws, a look that's further reinforced by MOst's feline-like eye logo on the included alloy seatpost and the clean look of internal cable routing. The color schemes are subtle, which sharpens the contrast in details. In an industry that's continually moving towards matte-on-matte paint schemes, the FCX stands out in a classic way. Its durable, upgradeable construction means that you'll be enjoying its gorgeous looks and lively stability for many 'cross seasons to come. Fall is fleeting, but the FCX is forever.

The Pinarello FCX is available in four sizes ranging from 47cm to 56cm in the colors Black and White. Included with the frameset are a headseat, a MOst C-Alu seatpost, a seatpost collar, and conversion parts to accommodate Shimano Di2 groups.
