Item # PLZ1124

When we were kids we relished getting the darkest, starkest-looking tan line on our arms; it made us feel that much closer to our pro idols and set us apart from our football - or soccer-playing mates. Now, with our adult knowledge of the damage the sun's rays can do to our skin, we recognize the need for some sorts of protection. The Pearl Izumi Sun Sleeves not only offer UPF 40-rated protection, but they actually keep us cooler in the hot sun than we would be riding with bare arms.

That's because they are made from the Elite Transfer fabric with In-R-Cool technology, which work together to manage moisture as you perspire and provide optimal skin cooling. The In-R-Cool technology used here is the very same used in Pearl Izumi's most advanced jerseys and works to wick rapidly and keep the surface temperature of the fabric down by reflecting the sun's UV rays. Add to this the sun protection that the Sun Sleeves provide, and you will be able to ride all day without having to worry about overheating or caring for sunburned arms in the evening.

Designed to fit like a second skin, the stretchy Sun Sleevesinclude the Direct-Vent mesh on the underside of the arms to help with ventilation, something you will be very happy about on a hot day around 3 o'clock. And if you happen to be out riding as the sun is setting, Pearl Izumi has added reflective elements to help keep you safe.

The Pearl Izumi Sun Sleeves come in White and are available in sizes Small, Medium and Large.

  • Hydrophilic Elite Transfer fabric breathes, dries quickly, and wicks moisture efficiently to cool your skin through evaporation
  • In-R-Cool technology reflects the sun's rays to lower surface temperatures on the fabric and offer UPF 40+ protection during long rides under clear skies
  • Mesh on the inner arm dumps excess heat and moisture quickly as you ride
  • Reflective details enhance your visibility to drivers during early morning or evening rides
  • Black colorway (depending on inventory) more effectively reflects UV radiation to prevent sun burn
  • White colorway (depending on inventory) doesn't absorb as much heat to keep you cooler during longer rides

Comfortable but durability questioned

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I loved the fit and comfort of these sun sleeves from the start and bought a few pairs immediately after my initial trial. I had no complaints until after a month and a half of repeated use, I noticed the forearms had thinned to the point that I wonder if it still offers protection from the sun. You can see through the fabric now with a large patch that is noticeably thinner on both forearms. Not sure what wore out the fabric, the washing method, the sun exposure, friction, etc. They have been washed using a gentle cycle in a protective wash sack and air dried in a sunroom on a clothes line, no dryer used. This happened to the white pair. I'm currently using the black pair to see if it has similar issues. I'm hopeful that it was an isolated occurrence on that one pair of sun sleeves because they have lived up to the hype regarding comfort and breathability. I would give this product a 5 star rating, but because of the thinning issue, I will give an inconclusive 3 star rating until I've tested out my remaining pairs.

Excellent quality and fit...

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased a pair of Pearl iZumi Sun Sleeves in White, size Large. The fabric has great elasticity and stretches snugly onto my arms without slipping. They work very well at protecting my arms from over-exposure to sun while keeping them cool. I use them for my daily 35-mile training rides on my road bike.

It was difficult to determine what size to get. They appear to be available in only small, medium and large (no XL). I'm 6'2" with long arms and the Pearl iZumi measurement chart is confusing. On the Pearl iZumi website it says to measure your arm length from your shoulder to your wrist while your arm is bent at a 90 degree angle at the elbow. The size chart here at Competitive Cyclist does not say to bend the arm. My arm length is 25" when not bent and 26" when bent. Neither length is anywhere near the range listed in the sizing charts. Some better instructions are obviously needed.

My bicep circumference is just under 14 inches (relaxed) and my wrist circumference is just under 8 inches.

The Large size is plenty long enough. In fact, I can pull them all the way up to the hollow above top of my bicep, and they are still long enough to cover my entire wrist at the opposite end. So no skin is exposed outside my riding gloves. As for the circumference, the Large size is very snug on my arms but they are not too snug. However, if you're a body builder with "big guns" (large biceps) you might find them a bit tight. Sadly, an extra large size does not appear to be available.

I've very happy with the quality and fit of these sun sleeves and highly recommend them.

One of the better sun sleeves out there

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been wearing sun sleeves for yrs and I find the newer Pearl Izumi to be lighter and more effective than some of the others I have owned. They are certainly lighter then the old Assos sun sleeves. I wear the medium and at 6'2, they are plenty long.

Pearl Izumi is known for it's "american" sizing" so at 6'1-6'2, 175 lbs, I am not their target market. That said, the medium size fits great. I only use them on the road bike so white is less of an issue with regards to cleanliness. They certainly beat covering your arms with sun screen and they do a much better job!

Very cool in hot sun

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Pleasantly surprised by how cool they feel in the hot Florida sun compared to a long sleeve bike shirt. Easy to put on and off. Feel a little tight on upper arm but that's better than loose and sliding down.

heard about these so decided to try some as the price is reasonable. Wow. An odd sensation at first as it feels almost like they are cooling your arms more than being bare. But they work well and there's no more fumbling with sunscreen and becoming human fly paper on long rides. I have several pairs.

Slight preference for the black as the whites get very grimy quickly. And if you are super hot, you can wet them with water and it helps a great deal.

Combined with a castelli mesh based I can go out in 10 degrees more heat than before.

These really keep you cool on a hot day!

Does the white version have UPF 40 as well as the black version? I've found differing information.
