The middle road.

In theory, dressing for seasonal cycling is easy. Summer? Shorts and a jersey. Fall? Long sleeves or warmers. Winter? Ski clothes. In reality, though, the seasons aren't static, and the weather doesn't change as definitely as the picture on the calendar. Pearl Izumi built the P.R.O. Thermal Bib Knickers with enough versatility to accommodate this reality. In a world of imperfect solutions, knickers are the ultimate middle road.

The P.R.O. Thermal Bib Knickers use Pearl Izumi's Thermal fabric throughout their construction. Thermal is recommended for temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so it slots in as the cool-weather option in Pearl's clothing line. The difference between it and the cold-weather gear, PI Softshell, is that the latter incorporates wind and water resistant fabric. The Thermal fabric focuses solely on warmth and is more breathable than the Softshell. If you don't plan on riding in torrential downpours, then Thermal is your ideal choice.

Since they're knickers, the P.R.O. Thermals are suitable for riding from mid-fall through early winter and even on sunny days in January, depending on your climate. They're a simple solution that warms your core and protects your knees during those cool autumn mornings and bright winter afternoons. For riding in the dead of frozen winter, they become the ultimate thermal base layer below a pair of chamois-free tights.

The knickers include Pearl's P.R.O. Anatomic 1:1 Chamois, which has a varied geography of light foam density ranging from 4 to 13 millimeters. Its seamless construction is unobtrusive with no abrupt edges or goofy patterning, just the right amount of support and comfort where you want it. In an industry that often thrives on extravagant, overwrought designs, the 1:1 insert is refreshingly minimalist and effective.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Thermal Bib Knickers are available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large in the color Black.

Great fit but little padding

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium

These fit me well, but what padding there is steps down to very little way too quickly. If you are in a very areo position with narrow sit bones you might get some benefit. My sit bones are about 110-115mm apart and I am down pretty low so I really don't neeed that much coverage.

A little bit of awesome

  • Fit: True to size

Pearl Izumi USA is based just ouside Boulder, CO. They understand cold weather cycling.

Keeping your knees (and sinovial fluid) warm while riding in cool weather (shoulder seasons) is actually very important. These Pearl Izumi PRO knickers work great.

I love how the leg extends down a little further than most knickers to provide thermal protection to the calf muscles. For this reason (among others: quality, price), these are my favorite knickers made. Better than others I have tried, even from the likes of Castelli and Assos.

Lastly, and worth noting, Pearl Izumi quality and QC is among the best in the business (as is their rare lifetime defect warranty).

Sizing: The fit is normal (unlike Castelli). Order your normal street size.
