Description

Just right.

Your standard Lycra bib shorts do a fantastic job of keeping you dry, fast, and comfortable for the majority of the year. But, when the cold weather takes hold, that ultra-thin material becomes more noticeable than ever. So, to provide that necessary protection in a bib short design, Pearl Izumi created its new P.R.O. Thermal Bib Shorts. Just like the rest of its top-end P.R.O. bib shorts, these were constructed with its detailed paneling design. However, the P.R.O Thermals differ in that insulating fabrics were incorporated in order to ensure that you remain warm, comfortable, and supported out there in the cold.

Pearl Izumi constructed the bulk of the bib shorts using a combination of two distinct technical fabrics. The first is P.R.O. Thermal, which is a high-end blend of two of Pearl Izumi's advanced materials. It relies on the exceptional moisture transporting properties of its Transfer fabric to keep you dry, while the lightweight brushed fleecy interior insulates your leg muscles. The Transfer fabric is known for its exceptional moisture management, which works by pulling sweat from your skin to the quick-drying outer-surface. A lightweight thermal fleece material was then blended with the Transfer, providing just the right amount of insulating protection. Moving up from the legs, Pearl Izumi constructed the bib portion with its lightweight Direct-Vent mesh for added comfort and support. Together, these materials work as a system to keep you warm, dry, and comfortable during your early and late season rides.

The elasticity in the fabric panels allows the bib shorts to follow your movements in the saddle. This means that the fit is free from any bunching, pinching, or chafing while tucked in the cycling position. Pearl Izumi calls this its 'Form Fit,' which is cut to closely follow the contours of your body while still providing a full-range of motion. Combined with the anatomic cut and elastic P.R.O. Thermal fabric, the smooth flatlock stitching used to join the bib shorts' panels further reduces any friction at the seams.

The P.R.O. bib shorts were built around Izumi's seamless 4D Chamois. This insert incorporates 12mm variable density padding throughout its three-layer construction. The new foam technology means that it's 35% lighter and thinner than previous generations, while still maintaining its pre-shaped, four-way stretch anatomic shape. The chamois also incorporates the Izumi's pressure relief technology (PRT) and active carbon yarns in order to optimize comfort, blood flow, and thermo-regulation.

Pearl Izumi finished the bib shorts with reflective elements for heightened visibility to motorists in low-light riding conditions.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Thermal Bib Shorts are available in the color Black/black and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large.

Warm, slightly big

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are pretty nice bibs for those cool fall and early spring rides. Chamois is on par with higher end Louis Garneau, as its on the thicker side (compared to Castelli's thinner chamois). Only gripe with them is the sizing is on the American/Vanity side. I wear a medium in LG, Castelli, Mavic, Sugoi, and Endura. I followed my normal medium rule and these are slightly on the large side. Its not enough for me to return them or not wear them as having slightly looser fit is better for staying warm. I've done one 130 mile ride and numerous sub 50 mile rides and have never complained about the comfort of these bibs.
