Cold-weather riding starts here.

Amassing a cycling wardrobe for the cooler months can be a daunting affair. With all of the different choices and possibilities you need to prepare for, it can also be a bit spendy. We don't always have room in the closet or the budget for all the precisely specialized gear that we'd like, so items like the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Thermal Bib Shorts are among the first pieces of cold-weather kit that we pick up as the seasons change.

The P.R.O. Shorts use Pearl Izumi's Thermal fabric throughout their construction. Thermal is recommended for temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so it slots in as the cool-weather option in Pearl's clothing line. The difference between it and the cold-weather gear, PI Softshell, is that the latter incorporates wind and water resistant fabric. The Thermal fabric focuses solely on warmth and is more breathable than the Softshell. If you don't plan on riding in torrential downpours and you layer to protect against wind, then the Thermal is your ideal choice.

Since they're shorts, the P.R.O. Thermals offer you the opportunity to wear them alone for cool days or add leg or knee warmers on a ride when the temperature drops. As one of our resident bike gurus puts it, "warmers afford you more real-time layering opportunities." If you overheat on a climb or during hard intervals, you can quickly slip them off. This is in stark contrast to full-length thermal tights, where the only option is ungracefully folding the bottoms up over your lower legs where they then flap about in the breeze.

The shorts include Pearl's P.R.O. Anatomic 1:1 Chamois, which has a varied geography of light foam density ranging from 4 to 13 millimeters. Its seamless construction is unobtrusive with no abrupt edges or goofy little designs, just the right amount of support and comfort where you want it. In an industry that often thrives on extravagant design, the 1:1 insert is refreshingly minimalist and effective.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Thermal Bib Shorts - Men's are available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large in the color Black.

Typical PI fit, really warm material

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

The fit is the typical PI fit. The inside of the material has a soft nap that is warm from moment putting on.

best thermal bibs

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs large

Ive had 2 pairs of these that have lasted three winters of cold weather riding and commuting. They are now threadbare but have been worn a ton.
1. they do fit roomier than traditional bibs but I think that makes them warmer
2. they are long enough to have good overlap w knee or leg warmers
3. chamois average, but has held up well
4. fabric remains warm after repeated washings

I'm really happy with these for what they are- thermal bibs that allow you to ride in sub 20 degree temps without freezing your nads off or wearing a second pair of tights. Comfortable into the 40's,, so you don't get hot on the way home from work. Ive owned panache, castelli and capo thermal bibs and I like these best. In general, I don't like PI bibs but these are great

Good Functional Winter Bib Short

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:Runs large

The thermal fabric is pretty warm. I like the functionality of using these with either knee warmers or full leg warmers. Only gripe, the chamois is not the greatest.

Sizing , Chamois and Function All Good

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I always return to Pearl because the medium product fits my 5'6" frame at 158 pounds reliably and the Pro Thermal shorts have evolved in good ways over the years at a good price point . I found the current 1:1 chamois to work really well on long rides this summer so was pleased to see it in new Thermals that I use for a late season event and winter riding in Steamboat . Since I always use leg warmers or tights with these
thermal shorts , I found the extra length to nicely anchor warmers . Assos and Castelli have great details , but for basic cold riding , the Pearl Pros do the job really well .

Fabric is NOT Soft.

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

These shorts fit very poor with tons of baggy in the front but the leg bands are tight. The material they use is very harsh on your undercarriage as well..

Long and roomy

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

I'm 5'8", 32" waist - the legs on the medium came down over my the tops of my knees.
