Packable protection.

Incredibly versatile, the Pearl Izumi Men's P.R.O. Short-Sleeve Rain Jacket offers stashable protection from wet conditions. Pair this short-sleeve jacket with your favorite arm warmers for customizable protection during inclement weather.

Its lightweight shell consists of polyester, with a 2.5-layer membrane for moisture-shedding protection. High levels of breathability keep you from sweating profusely when you're riding hard, while fully sealed seams prevent outside moisture from seeping in. The jacket's aggressive front-to-back shape enhances its fit, even when you're dropped over the bars. Its elasticized drop-tail hem increases coverage and protection at the rear, keeping road mist and splashes from soaking your body. Additionally, you'll find reflective logos and details for extra visibility after dark.

More versatile than most rain jackets

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

For years I've used the Pearl Izumi Pro Lite Barrier jackets. My biggest complaint was that they don't breathe and as a result you get really warm and sweaty, to the point that when it does warm up you need to stop and dry out after taking the jacket off. Whenever one was getting old and I replaced it, I would take the old one and cut the sleeves at the elbow, which made it much more versatile, allowing me to use in a broader range of temperatures (knowing that if I was wearing a jacket, then I already had arm warmers on). This worked fairly well, but during hard efforts I'd still get pretty sweaty.

Then I saw this jacket and thought I would try it out. So here's the good and bad:

PROS:
* Great wind blocking - works as a wind and rain jacket
* Short sleeves allow you to wear it (with arm warmers) in
temps from about 40-65 degrees, especially if it's cloudy
and/or windy.
* IT BREATHES! It breathes REALLY well. During intervals
you still get sweaty, but the inside of the jacket remains
quite dry.
* No pockets - (for some this may be a CON, but I want my
stuff in my jersey pockets and protected if it's raining)
* Colors - I know some Boulderites that think it's a sin to wear
such garish colors, but I'd rather be seen and alive than
fashionable and dead.

CONS
* Sizing is form fit (some may not see this as a CON). Unless
you are a pretty fit racer type, order a size up. There is NO
stretch to this jacket.
* No offset zipper, but at least the neck is generous and
doesn't strangle me.
* It's not as compressible or packable as I'd like. Probably the size of TWO of the PRO lite jackets packed down. Still reasonable for the wind and waterproofness, and not that big of a deal since you can wear it in temps from 40-65, maybe 70 with no arm warmers on a cloudy day.

Like most PI gear, it's expensive, but I feel like I can use this in place of a couple of different vests/jackets, so worth it for me. Oh, and the fit seems a bit odd until you get on the bike and over the bars, then it's spot on.
