When you're crazy enough to ride, you're covered

When it's raining so hard that waterfalls form on your porch stairs, when you're pretty sure you shouldn't wear those new shoes on the ride, no matter how sexy they are, protect your core with the Pearl Izumi Men's P.R.O. Barrier WxB Jacket.

Pearl used its P.R.O. Barrier fabric for this wet weather wonder. It's a highly waterproof and yet breathable material constructed from a titanium WxB laminate stretch-knit face, and a nylon-tricot laminate barrier. Combined, these fabrics help to maintain your core's temperature by holding body-generated heat against your skin while wicking moisture from perspiration away from the skin to the shell. This allows it to evaporate rather than accumulate. Even though it may be wet on the outside, the only way to stay warm beneath the shell is to stay dry.

In addition to the fabric being waterproof, all of the internal seams of the P.R.O. Barrier have been taped to ensure that the whole jacket is waterproof. Often, with rain jackets, leak points occur along the zipper. Pearl Izumi used a combination of waterproof zipper, and internal draft flap to seal out water. You'll be kept dry from all angles.

We've all had cell phones die terrible deaths due to water damage. The P.R.O. Barrier jacket features two waterproof pockets — one chest and one back — to keep deaths by water to a minimum.

Small details make big differences when riding in a downpour. Pearl included asymmetrical cuffs that interface with rain gloves to create a seal, a detachable hood with a rain gutter, and a one-handed pull elastic drawcord at the waist.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Barrier WxB Jacket is available in sizes Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black/screaming yellow and Black/electric blue.

watertight, light and effective

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great jacket. Taped seams, waterproof electronic chest pocket and effective vents make this a very nice jacket. For a Seattle rider, this will be a good external layer during the rainy winter/early spring months but it's a little warm for anything over 55 degrees. One important note is that the jacket runs big, I'm 5'11", 36" chest and normally a medium Pearl Izumi jacket fits great but it was noticeably large on me. Returned and went with a small and it's perfect.

You Won't Believe How Warm this is

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Wore this jacket all winter with either one or two Lycra base layers on the coldest days of winter 2014. From the appearance this jacket is not going to be warm but I rode on the coldest days with both vents opened. One of the best all around fall/winter/spring jackets on the market. Oh and if you do get caught in storm on Emigration Canyon rest assured you'll stay dry all the way home.

Everything it should be

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have only used once, but I'm sold. I used in relatively heavy rain in the low 40s. I stayed warm and dry (had base layer and ls jersey under it) for two hours. It breathes well but definitely stops the wind and water. The only slight gripe is I wish the zips were easier to operate with one hand but it probably wouldn't be waterproof if they were. The jacket is very comfortable, quiet when moving around...doesn't feel like the typical waterproof layer. If you can deal with the price it gets the job done.

The specs say there is a removeable hood with this jacket, but there isn't.
